Craigslist
Almost got scammed today. A guy in California wanted to buy my black 4x4. He wanted to pay for it through PayPal but would not let me call. When I did call he wouldn't answer. Then did a reverse check and the number didnt even belong to him. You know how Craigslist says, don't deal unless its face to face. The guy won't even respond anymore

Re: Craigslist
Did he want you to ship it? How does this scam work through paypal, I know the one where they send you a fake money order.

Re: Craigslist
I've been scammed face to face anyway. Just have to be real careful when it comes to CL and Ebay.
To clarify, when I say scammed I mean that the item was misrepresented, not that I lost my money for nothing in return.

Re: Craigslist
I think I'm confused.. How was he scamming you through that?
The common scam I get almost every time I sell something is the stupid emails that say, "I LOVE the product your selling and it looks exactly the condition you are describing it in. I would gladly pay you over the amount you are asking if you can just send me your name address yadda yadda so I can mail you a check as I'm on business out of the country and do not want to wait to buy your product." |

Re: Craigslist
I think his idea is that if someone emails you stating he wants to purchase your vehicle although he has not seen it then refuses to communicate it's leading up to a scam. Clever they are but smart they are not.

Re: Craigslist
Yeah, I suppose that is true. You'd think anyone that wants to truly purchase a vehicle would actually WANT to interact with the seller. hah.

Re: Craigslist
Someone did this to me on my old dodge. Texted me said they would pay the asking and would have a friend come get it. So I gave them my spam email, low and behold I got a fake PayPal email for 1000 more than I was asking. Messages them about it and they said it was so I could ship it to them. Not the origional plan. So i then started asking them for a real PayPal email and they started getting quite. Then they stopped messaging me. Called the number and it turned out to be a google voice number with no mailbox set up. Go figure.

Re: Craigslist
I had a similar email when I sold my s10. That didn't get very far at all. I did however buy a 10 bolt posi rear that was not a posi rear.... live and learn. And don't trust anyone selling you something.

Re: Craigslist
SILLYOLDMAN, you are exactly correct. He had been texting me all day but I was at work. When I got home, I asked him if I could call him and he would not answer . Then when I tried to call, he would answer. My wife did a reverse check on the phone number and turns out the phone # belong to an elderly woman in a different city. As Craigslist says, DON'T DEAL IF YOU CAN'T DO IT FACE TO FACE

Re: Craigslist
Guys whether I am selling or buying anything I always wait for funds to clear in my account irrespective of the payment method and if I am buying I prefer paying with Paypal because you can dispute transactions.

Re: Craigslist
Bingo. That's how I do all my Craigslist stuff too.
Also, what I started doing instead of giving out my address to anyone "interested" in buying an item.. I ask them for their email address so I can send them map directions to my location. Once I get their email address, go to Google maps, find your location on the map, right click, select "Directions To Here" and then get the URL Link to that and email it to them. That only gives them the map coordinates of your location, not your flat our address. Not that anyone can really DO that much with your address, but I like to think that gives an added security of having someones email address and it will weed out the weirdos that are working something as they either will give you a fake email or nothing at all. Either way, they wont show up at your doorstep someday. |
