Shifter stop

So since I bought my 72 K5 the shifter has been a bit funky. Really loose and it does not need to be pulled back to shift into gear (automatic trans) like in my other truck (newer). so I believe the problem is at this plate on the column that resricts the shift lever from moving when in gear unless you pull back on the handle. I have no idea what its called and the pic is not that great but any info would be appreciated. If it could be replaced, what would it be called?

My th350 auto does not need to be pulled back to shift between all forward gears and neutral. It only needs to be pulled back to get into reverse and park. I think that this is normal, but others may prove me wrong.

Mine is shot like yours 72. And feels loose. Looking forward to the responses.

Had the same problem. There is a steel tab that is part of the selector on the shaft that grinds down after 40 years of use. You will need to weld material onto it and grind it to the correct height and shape so that it works properly by restricting selection to reverse from neutral on down. May have to weld/grind a few times to get it just right. This is what I did and my truck shifts just like a brand new one. I don't have any pics of it though, sorry. It's hard to explain but if you look closely you should see where the original tab has worn away.
