Saw two 67-72 tow trucks driving around today
First one was on the freeway. Was a GMC. Had the yellow strobe light on top that was on and spinning. Had some sort of shop sign on the door. Second one was a Chevy tow truck that passed me on a side street.
Do people buy these and drive them around like a regular bed pickup, or are these still being used for towing work? Seems kinda cool, but not having an actual bed would get a bit irritating for me personally Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Saw two 67-72 tow trucks driving around today
Why not drive them around. Most guys on here don't haul anything in their beds and the big craze is "build a shop truck". A tow truck is what a shop pickup wishes it was. They were the true shop trucks back in the day. Some are still used and some are collector's items, just like pickup trucks. You can haul a lot of parts in the bed and you can always pull a trailer. The sling-type tow rig is outdated for towing modern vehicles due to the front end design and air bag sensors. You need dollies or a cradle-type.
Here's mine. Just imagine cruising around in this. I love it. It has that visor (that I wouldn't want on any other 67-72 but is perfect on this) you look out from under like a big rig. It has some rake, because it hauls!,and rides tight. It's geared low and growls on down the road like it's on the prowl for something to hook up to.

I hope to be driving mine next year if all goes well. I bought mine and am restoring it because I'm nuts. NO, well maybe but I like to think of it as a way of preserving a bit of history. I just fell in love with this truck and had to have it! (my avatar) I would LOVE to start a small towing company (catering to only real cars/trucks that can be picked up by slings-the rest can stay out there broke down LOL) but from what I heard, it's a very expensive proposition. I'll just take mine for an occasional cruise or drag home a parts car now and then. (I think I can do that legally!) Or heaven forbid I need to rescue one of my own...) Here's my build thread. It's a novel so have some time to read it: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=448256

Re: Saw two 67-72 tow trucks driving around today
Bob,when you get yours on the road you will know just what I am saying. Or,maybe you drove one in the past and recall that feeling. I worked at a gas station...oh,I mean "service station" when I was in high school. They never had me tow but I'd go out for hot shots, flat repairs, winch stuck vehicles, and for supper!. I still remember how cool it was cruising in that truck. This was when everything was jacked up in the rear and rode tight over bumps. I believe mine has 5.13s by the way it runs out. It's a prowler if ever there was one. I would love to go over mine and bring it back to the proud resident of the open bay by night and out front under the sign by day that these trucks once were. The patina look is cool for now, though, but I think about cool themes for a paint job and some fresh wheels all the time.

The more I look at these things the more I want one. I guess this will be the next truck I add to my herd.

Re: Saw two 67-72 tow trucks driving around today
That GMC on the ksl listing above seems to be priced well, I'm just not into tow trucks or I'd have my buddy go take a look at it. I think it would be a great buy for someone though.

Re: Saw two 67-72 tow trucks driving around today
That one is pretty cool, but I don't care for how low the bed sits or the lack of Budd wheels up front. I do like the big block. I have a Caddy 500 and conversion kit to put in mine but holding off till I know if I'm keeping it.
