Re: no turning radius

Probably need a little more info.
My '61 Suburban will turn on a dime. I can do a u-turn on a 2-lane road and just a little bit of the shoulder.
Tightest turning radius of any vehicle I've ever driven.

Re: no turning radius

How many turns of the steering wheel, lock to lock do you have?

Is it equal, left and right?

Do the tires rub or interfer with anything when you turn the wheel in either direction? Have you seperated the outer tie rods from the spindles to see if you can get more turn radius, meaning is the spindle rotation stoped because the rack wont let it move any further?

Just some thoughts to try and help you figure this out?

Re: no turning radius

If you have a true positive traction rear end I think that can effect you turn radius.

Re: no turning radius

Here's a bit of info that was relayed to me once. This is not a claim of true fact, just some logical thinking that was passed on.
Using a Mustang R & P may not always work, and here's how was explained to me:

The Mustang has a track width of 56 1/2", where our trucks are around 60"
In order to make the rack work, either longer tie rod ends or rack extensions usually have to be used. Basically there is not enough 'throw" in the rack to make our spindles turn all the way to the stops.

One solution is to use a rack and pinion from an '84-'88 T bird with the corresponding tie rod ends. The 'Bird has a track width of 60 1/2", which is alot closer to our trucks.
For my Suburban, I reamed the taper in the spindle to match the T Bird tie rods and it works fine. I have not driven it, but it turns against the stops in both directions. I am running an open rear differential, so should not have any adverse effects there.

Yeah, I think that the Chevy is embarrassed to have F$&D parts and is just complaining.

Re: no turning radius

Try a TRW # 2203A it will mount up the same. That's what I have in my Suburban. I did make my own crossmember and mounts.
There's also a 2203F that has a different mount bushing and the upper portion is different. The 2203T is the quick ratio version-I'd not recommend it, as it tends to make larger vehicles kind of hard to control, since it reacts so much faster.

Mine is a reman from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. I believe it is their A1Cardone line. Was about $150 with lifetime warranty. it came with the rubber mounts.
