67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

Hey everyone, i want to get your opinion on what i should do. Ive been back and forth on a motor for my 67, Right now the truck has a 468 13.5-1 comp. wayyy to big of a cam for street and im kinda fed up with not being able to really enjoy the truck..

Im torn between a stock-mild 454 or installing a 5.3 or 6.0 ls engine, with an overdrive trans. possibly even going with a/c. Here are a few pics of the truck, i want to get some opinions on what to do.

Thanks

Matt

If you didn't have a motor id say go ls but since that ones already thee I would just do a cam swap and an overdrive trans and call it good

I love LS engines, but the swap would get real pricey. You already have a BBC in there so just make the one you have a bit less radical. God granted you the ability to jam a giant-a$$ engine under that hood. Why waste the space?

A milder cam and a drop in compression down to 10:1 would make that a really potent yet drivable street machine for a lot less than an LS swap.

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

The LS motor, say a 6.0L or 6.2L, can give you as much power as a mild BBC and is much lighter. It will also get at least twice the mpg. The trade off is the initial cost to do the swap; engine/trans, harness, ecm tune, headers, fuel system etc... with a BBC you already have all of that. I have a 5.3L in mine and I really like it, plenty of power and the convenience of fuel injection. Another variable you might consider is de-tuning your current BBC, new lower compression pistons and cam and then adding an aftermarket fuel injection and a 4L80E. I'd also add a truss style accessory drive on the front and A/C and ride the wheels off of it! I think this way may even be cheaper than an LS swap. Just my 2¢.

I was gonna say, I know 10:1 on an aluminum headed motor is about all you want on pump gas....

What ^^he^^ said, almost exactly. Although, they do sell the parts to carburate some of the LS motors. Might be a cheap way to get the motor swapped in, then do the electronics later.

The LS motors really are amazing pieces.

Another thing about LS engines is they don't seem to leak fluids like the earlier generation engines. That is always a plus!

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

I say LS, only because I did the exact same thing (496 that was quite a bit milder than yours), wanting to make my 72 a DD again. If its purely for street ability reasons then stick with the BBC. If you want to cruise it more (road trip, daily, MPG concerns, etc) the LS is the way to go.

By the time you have pulled the motor, replaced the cam, and rebuilt the bottom end you are already going to be in it for quite a bit of time and cost. I would try to sell your BBC as is and use the funds towards an LS swap. Again, I am pretty biased however...

I looked into going the carb route for my LS1 as well, but it seemed to be more of a "because I can" modification rather than a practical one. There is a lot more involved in converting an LSx to carb than just getting the factory FI going. The electronics are pretty simple if you buy a custom made 4 wire hookup swap harness.

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

BB VOTE!!
I've NEVER got 15mpg out of my '02, 6.0 LS powered GMC.... bought it new. Plenty of power, great dependability at 145,000mi, but not great fuel mileage. Seems pretty typical for 6.0's... 4.8's & 5.3's do better.
Prolly just 'cause I'm OLD, but to me there's something special about a snotty BB Chevy. How 'bout a "mild" 400++hp. pump gas big block.... & maybe a TKO 600 for fun. Put in some A/C. Run it HARD
PS.. my BB 2wd. O.D Blazer will give 15mpg at 70+ mph
BTW. BEAUTIFUL TRUCK, '67 short fleet sm. back window is my FAVORITE '67-'72

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

you said you really want to enjoy the truck, so put a fuel injected modern motor with an over drive trans. I promise you'll really enjoy driving it then!

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

I think you tame that truck a little - but stick wtih the BBC. Bulletproof, reliable, adn if you back off the cam and reduce compression to 10:1 wtih a nice set of Edelbrock Aluminum heads, you can run pump gas and it will still give you 400HP+

Awesome truck. What color is that???

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

Really nice truck, and it will be with either motor I think I would probably go with a calmed down big block depending on how much driving your planning on. If it is a lot of weekend riding stay with big-block if a lot of daily drives are planned go with the LS based motor and do something like maybe a 5.3 turbo.

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

I vote de-tune the big block, maybe just change the pistons to some pump gas friendly ones and drive the crap out of it. Do you have a solid lifter cam? If you do change to a hyd. roller then drive the crap out of it. Nice truck by the way.

I have a 500hp big block with a 4l80e and I drive it any chance I get, hell I make up reasons to drive it. It is so much fun. Doesn't get very good gas mileage but some of that is because my right foot spends a bit too much time on the floor. Pump gas and a nice hyd. cam...it's just fun.

Nothing like big block torque. Just mat the gas and it will make you smile!

Re: 67 swb keep bbc or swap to ls motor?

If you go ls you can get a victor junior carb intake and either run a carb or an efi throttle body setup on it. And you can get a msd 6010 box that will run the factory coils. It's a good way to go it you want the old scoop look with the modern motor
