Noobie

Well I went and did it. I bought my first 67-72. I picked up a 68 short fleet with a 69 front, power steering, 350/350, 12 bolt and 5 lug conversion. It's rough but has potential. It runs and drives good but needs some work to be truly road worthy. First order of business is to stop the rust, then get it road worthy. After that fix the rust.

Great truck to start with! Just like everyone else... Don't get to overwhelmed. Cruise in it for a while before stripping it down.

Re: Noobie

Nice truck to start with, Looks like you got it figured out, by stopping rust, and getting it road worthy. That way you can enjoy it, then work on fixing rust as time and money allows. Good luck with your build and keep us posted with lots of pics of your progress.

Re: Noobie

Thanks for the welcome and all the great replys.

I know that once I start I will want to go deeper but this is my first one so I'm gonna do my best to enjoy driving it and making improvements as I go.

There’s been a lot of jerry rigging over the years, like using the 6 cylinder mounts and welding them to the frame to put in the 350, that will keep me busy for a while.

I’m looking forward to the journey.

Re: Noobie

Everybody looks at projects differently but my plan usually starts with making them safe first. Getting the brakes functional, checking the suspension and steering, making sure all lights function properly,, stuff like that. Seat covers and trim parts can always come later as long is it is a running, steering and stopping truck. Just my thoughts....

Re: Noobie

I agree, your right. Safety first. The truck inspection is good till April but it does need some attention. One thing I noticed is the brake pedal is really close to the seat and its hard to get my boot on it. I've got to figure out whats going on there before I drive it regularly.

I will definitly look at the brakes. It has disc but no power. I plan on adding a booster, replacing the wheel cylinders and either rebuild or replace the calipers.

I got some wheels and tires from a friend so the rubber is now good.

Re: Noobie

Yes, Street Smart. I've had a GN since 1999. Here is the current state. I got the engine running but still need to paint the bumper fillers and buy new tires. Then either paint it or sell it.

Re: Noobie

Wheels look good. Just replace the calipers, they don't cost much since you will have cores for the exchange. Also, new hoses really help stopping ability.

Re: Noobie

welcome, and nice truck. brake hoses are a must if your doing everything else. they might look ok but they collapse on the inside.

KOOL, I`ve had a couple of them over the years. I worked at Buick when they came out and fell in love with them. I just sold my "beater T Type" couple of months ago, it was the last turbo V6 regal in the stable. I`m working on a LS swap in to a mint low option 86 regal now.

That regal is gonna be sweet with a LS in it. The turbo buicks are a ton of fun but I'm ready for something different.

Calipers and hoses it is. Are the ones from O'Reilys good or is there somewhere else I should get them?

Re: Noobie

I should probably say they aren't since I work for a local NAPA dealer, but you should not have any trouble with the parts they sell. Shop around, times are tough out there...
