77 GMC Stepside build

So Im swapping a 4 speed out and a th350 into my 77 short step side. I have a donor 79 long box Chev. Im having to modify the auto crossmember from the 79 to fit the 77. Not a big deal but had been under the impression it would be a direct bolt in. Was there a change between 77 and 79? I'll post pics of what Im doing later. Thanks

New stuff, trans lines hooked up, Crossmember in. The exhaust on the truck had no mufflers! Cool sounding but too much getting pulled over.

Looking good! What type of mufflers did you go with? Also, tell me how you like that shifter - thinking of doing the same thing.

Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

We used some Flowmasters they were used in a drag car for a while but pretty new. We'll see how the B&M works I'm not actually a huge fan, its a cable one and Ive found them a pain to adjust. But it's a swap meet special it was cheap so hoping for the best.

Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

question: how did you run you external cooler lines? I just got back from working on mine and installed a plate type cooler but I don't know how to run the lines. Did you drill a hole in the core support or did you run them under everything and then back up? Thanks.

Are you going to keep the same paint combo? I think it looks pretty neat.

Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

My son did the lines, I'm pretty sure he ran them under the support I honestly didn't look that close lol. As for the color, the paint looks better in pics than up close but ya the effect is pretty good. Its going to be my sons 1st truck so were not going to put much more money into it, unless he wants to pony up.

Talking Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

Yeah thanks. Its got some rust issues, driver floor, panels, the usual. Nothing too bad but we'll find a cab if it comes to it.
We fired it up for the first time this morning, had to swap starters, little exhaust leak, still needs a tune up and stuff. But its coming along nicely nice to not have to be in a hurry

Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

So, got the shifter mounted and and adjusted, turned out to be pretty easy. Also making a cover for the original shifter hole

Re: 77 GMC Stepside build

Broke my finger today getting the bench seat out of the 79. I had the seat scooted back and the latch slipped and it came forward on my hand if I hadnt been wearing thick ass fur lined leather gloves I would have lost it without a doubt. Be wary! Was like a one in a million shot but damn it hurt I almost hurled!
