61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
This is definitively a project for me, little by little I will get issues fixed up and/or upgraded.
I'm currently working on: getting the motor reliable, the main fuel tank, head light wiring, heater, general clean up. I have recently replace all 4 brake cylinders and master cylinder and cleaned up the carb. ![]() This is all scrapped off, now to find another one, I think this tank may not be stock, most of the pictures I have seen for this pickup tube/sending unit float is for a newer model rig. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am working on trying to find more history on my suburban, from the green paint that can be seen under the hood and the door jambs, it might be a old forest service rig, that might explain the two extra fuel tanks(aprox 75gal I think) to be out in the woods. Also with some extra stamped numbers on the vin tag, suggusted by a member that also seen the green, as maybe their way to inventory it.

I will be seeing if they have some other various parts to button up some small stuff and just to see what all they have to offer. I was down there a long time ago when I first started working on my rig about 10 years ago when it was still my dad's.

I looked over and seen this suburban... ![]() Another suburban that looked almost the same as mine! We stopped and introduced myself and talked with Greg. Come to find out he had 3 burbs and small parts to go with them. He kept this one which is actually a chevy but he liked how the gmc grill looked. He put the body on a 77(?) frame. The other two he had he sold to his neighbor and said to go talk to him in case he will be selling parts. One of the two had a tree come down across the roof above the front seats and bent the whole truck, body and frame. ![]() I got directions, and drove over to meet Jamie, nice guy, and there they were, sitting in his drive way with another so 3 I think is what he had. Plus a 60-66 pickup short bed step side as his daily driver. Great collection of rigs, but didn't get much time to talk with Jamie, he had a birthday party for his daughter at the time. Jamie also mentioned a older gentlemen that lived up the road, other than Greg, that had a 60-66 burb too. As I drove home we looked down the road and seen it. Neither Greg nor Jamie are using this forum, but Jamie sounded interested to check it out, hope to see them on here in the future... Crazy afternoon to see 5 more burbs in the Portland area just because my girlfriend said "LOOK..." ![]() ![]()

Re: 61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
Hey Cort, you mentioined in your build:
"Now, it is going to need a liner (because it is bare steel right now) + neck filler re-soldered + 1/8" drill hole filled + sender modification to flip the pick up tube 180 degrees. I am going to be over $350 into this tank. No me gusta. But, I will have the factory tank in brand new condition so I guess it's not all for nothing." What or how is the process to flip that tube around? ![]() ![]() My tank is a different shape but the p/u sending unit is the same... screws down to the tank. I seen the new unit at Dan's but wanted to see more of how much it was to get your tank done vrs. buying a new one. Im not sure if my tank is stock. What is the capacity of your tank?

Re: 61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
I picked up a heater fan resistor yesterday, it fits the plug and the fan has all three speeds now... good.
![]() But, it dosent clip in... ![]() ![]() Via my phone and the camera facing the screen I was able to get up behind and see what was going on. No mirror on hand, worked out so I could post the picture too. ![]() I will need to grind it down to match what works on my heater. ![]() I don't know if it will be easier to take that part of the duct out and get a good precise fit or try a mocked up piece of hard board.

Re: 61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
I also got a new glove box to replace the old one that got wet from the leaky windshield seal. Unscrewed the old one and took out the door and box.
![]() ![]() After getting the lock lubricated and the latch plate installed, noticed that the 2 upper screws and the clips that carry most the weight of the box were not there. Dang, I was hoping to get something completed this weekend. I also noticed that the glove box light assemble is not there either, might have to get one of those soon and button up the glove box and move on to other stuff.

How big is your tank Cort? I was flushing mine out to get out some big chunks, and it took about 16.5 gallons. Kinda small for the V-8, might have to keep using the saddle tanks, to make it anywhere.

Re: 61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
Seems small for the suburbans, but with a stock 6-cylender in them maybe thats all the bigger they were/are.

Re: 61 suburban 4x4 "the Crummy"
A co worker found this definition of a "crummy" while looking up logger lingo.
I'd could see my suburban doing this in its past. ![]() ![]()
