71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

Who makes the the best woodgrain bezel that most closely matches the original? I have a 60K mile Super with all the woodgrain but my cluster bezel chrome is scratched on the edges. I would like to replace it but the repop bezels with woodgrain I've seen don't look anything like my original.

I don't want to buy the vinyl and stick it on a new bezel because they come out looking like @##.

Any help would be appreciated!

Keep what you've got.

Maybe try some chrome spray paint? No good choices either way.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

You can have yours replated, then get the best sticker to match. Not sure who would have that sticker, though.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

contact this ebay seller - http://myworld.ebay.com/csm1986&ssPa...84.m1543.l2533

or give Jonathan (VA72C10) a holler - he may be able to help. He helped me find a full set (incl glovebox and alum insert).

Having said that - I kind of agree with the comments above, if only 60K (and if that is YOUR truck in the first post), I think it looks great and I wouldn't touch it. Or see if you can somehow get the original replated without destroying the woodgrain. I do agree, vinyl woodgrain stickers are hard to apply properly and they seldom match an existing glovebox woodgrain (or at least not a factory one).

The price of fame aint cheap though... I paid a pretty penny for my dash and glovebox parts - bought them together to ensure a match.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

Thanks for the replies and opinions. That is my truck in the first picture and will keep the bezel unless I can find a perfect replacement. It has been a few years since I looked into woodgrain bezels and thought maybe someone had come up with a solution. Finding a match for the bezel, glovebox, and doors is probably a futile effort.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

I don't think it's futile - I'd give cheyenne superman a shout on ebay (link I posted), he makes them like the originals. It is certainly the closest you'll get to the original wood dash - although I bought a set, the dash I received was a VERY close match to my original glovebox and instr bezel as well.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

Nice truck - I'm currently restoring an orange 72 K20 Super. I recently purchased a speed warning tach/vac dash for use in this truck from VA72C10 (Jonathan) with a matching glove box woodgrain panel. I'm happy with the matching woodgrain between the bezel and the GB panel (here's a pic of the cluster: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=554235). I plan to retire the OEM GB to the wall.

Interesting to note that my OEM GB door was black where yours is orange, vagaries with the production line I suppose.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

DeadheadNM, I had seen his work and actually saw a thread he had started getting a feel for the market for a complete NOS tach/vac/speed warning dash. He does awesome work. Do you have a picture of yours installed in your truck? How far along are you on your project?

Thanks Jocko, I will get in touch with him and see what he has available. I looked up his eBay page and saw his GB tin and woodgrain. They do look nice.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

Just for reference - I did the same thing as Deadhead, bought through Jonathan, but I believe the parts actually came from CSM. So, probably all the same stuff. Btw, Jonathan (VA72C10) was great to work with, and he very carefully shipped my parts so they were protected. I'd probably call him first like Deadhead said - he's responsive and I know you'll get a quality product either from or via him.

When you can click on the build link on my signature for the latest. It's week or so away from single stage Imron so will be a bit yet until the cluster is installed.

I'd be glad to post pics of the bezel together with the GB panel if you're interested. Pete

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

Yeah,it's Gary Terry (CSM) who I had in mind for the re-plating. That's who Jonathan buys from. I've had him re-plate OEM pieces for me for about 25 years. He was about the first ti die-cut the dash pieces from mylar, but it wasn't the correct woodgrain. Is the woodgrain he uses correct now? I got pieces from Jerry Brown (The Truck Shop) and they look great.

First pic is the restored s/w tach/vac 80lb oil gauge cluster w matching GB panel. In the second pic, I placed a restored tach/vac 80lb oil gauge cluster (Livrat) with an OEM albeit later model GM woodgrain bezel in excellent shape for comparison.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

that is the case okla - if you search on here, you'll find a few threads on the "black door" phenomenon. I believe the final consensus was that it was a single plant that tended to do that - it wasn't common, but it did happen enough to prove it was real. As long as the VIN on the SPID on the black door matches your VIN plate, it's legit.

Interesting. Not to hijack the thread but my truck came from the Flint, MI plant 03/72. Okla do you know your truck plant?

Contact cement, patience, and a heat gun will help lay it out and keep it adhered. It is best to use an OEM bezel, the woodgrain repop decal does not line up well at all to a repop bezel.

People over tighten the switch bevels and cause the mylar to distort...later on down the road. I did 22 years ago on an OEM bezel.

Re: 71-72 Cheyenne Super Bezel

The problem is the texturing on the dashes. Air can get under the new vinyl stickers. You can aid that as Scott mentioned with contact cement but it can still lift around the edges under heat (sunlight). I make a thin plastic applique like factory to leave a smooth surface to lay di-noc to and then contact cement the applique to the dash. Trevor
