Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

Good morning,

I need some help with a little issue. I would like to put stock wheels back on to my '56 1/2 ton. Unfortunately it seems that stock wheels are very hard to find. So I am trying to find some 6 lug 15" x 5" steel wheels that would accept the small stock style center cap. Does anyone make such wheel? It seems that all I can find is 5 lug.

I guess I didn't realize that the later wheels still had the nubs that would accept the late 50's center caps. In that case I will broaden my search, but I can say no junkyards around me have pre 1970 vehicles...

Re: Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

I have a catalog from Tuckers That sells clips for the newer wheels that didn't have them so you could mount the hubcaps.
Here's the quote from the catalog
"Our hubcap mounting clips will allow you to mount original hubcaps to wheels that did not come with clips."
Looks like these are designed to use the studs to hold the clip on.
There may be other venders that sell these but this is what I found.
www.tuckersparts.com is their website.

Re: Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

one option you might concider They make early 50s style hubcaps for the car rallys and I think they make a 6 lug rally in car style

Try thewheelsmith.net look at their O.E.M. wheels. They should be able to set you up. Take a look on the web site, if you are looking for new wheels & caps.
Good people

Re: Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

You would honestly think that someone on here that is within reasonable driving distance of you would have a few of those in his junk pile. Find one here and two there until you have a full set that match.

Some times you have to think beyond the obvious. Post a Craigslist add looking for stock wheels. Look for trucks that are sitting in yards with stock wheels, check tire stores that sell a lot of custom wheels to see if they have any take off wheels that are the right ones out back in the wheel pile. If you see a trailer that looks like it's made out of the back half of a 50's Chevy pickup stop and take a look. Travel a bit off the beaten path to the smaller out of the way wrecking yards. Look through the tire pile at the dump.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

There is a guy who lives just across the state line in Mississippi that I have been in contact with. He had posted ads on craigslist advertising lots of 55-57 Chevy parts. He said that he had 5 original 6 lug wheels that he was going to sell me for $150. (I was really excited about having a spare since I want this truck to be cross-country capable)

I was just about to go pick them up, then he gave me a call last night and told me that someone had stolen them..

He told me he thinks he still has two decent ones. I guess I could go get those..

Re: Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

Two there, one over there and two down there make a set of five. I still have a hard time thinking that six wheels that I see as scrap are worth 150 bucks though. My brain can't get around the prices that get asked and paid for stuff today.

Re: Help! 6 Lug Steelies?

I have these that I took of my 52. This thread got me to thinking about the way the center cap mounts over the little nubs. So here is my Dumb question of the day. Are these stock wheels to the 52 or are these later wheels that were been put on? When did they stop using the metal clips to mount the centers?

Dang, I made it to 11:55pm without asking a dumb question. I almost made it all day.

They are newer. I have this style on my truck and like them. If I could find some wide originals I would.

This is a 15 inch wheel with the clips on it for the hubcap. I went out and looked and I have it, 1 16 inch with clips and two 15 inch split rims with the clips.
