Ring & Pinion Carrier

I'm about to order a new ring and pinion to have someone install it but I need to know if its a 3 or 4 series Carrier. What does that mean?

This is from a post earlier today by Swervin Irvin:

A 3 series goes up to 3.73, and a 4 series is needed for 3.73 up. Although, I think you can buy aftermarket
3.73 and lower gears for a 3 series carrier.

I have 3.73 gears and I'm gonna replace them with the same. So the question is is I ever go with a higher gear such as 4.11 then I would need the 4 series carrier, right? What if I go with a posi unit later does that matter at all?

I believe the 3 series carrier is for 3.73 and numerically higher. 4 series is for numerically lower.

Posi units are a replacement carrier.

If you are thinking of a posi, I would suggest getting one now as a posi carrier is not that much more than a new carrier. I think Tom's differentials still has the Eaton posi's for $280.

You have a 4 series carrier now if you have 3:73's in your truck. My truck was the same and I installed a Posi in my truck and reused my gears. I ordered a 4 series Posi from Tom's like Jim mentioned for $280.
