SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

I don't have the SPID on my GMC, but I've got a "Protect O Plate" -a metal plate that is attached to the original service manual. Can this tell me details about my truck? It had a 327 stock, but when I do a search on auto parts websites, most of them show 1967 C1500 GMC trucks as only coming with 6 cyl engines. I wonder if mine is actually a 3/4 ton, or if it was special ordered with the 327. I assumed that any 3/4 ton would have 8 lug wheels (mine has 6 lug), but I don't know that much about these trucks yet.

Here is what the plate has on it:
top line has the VIN: CE1570DZxxxxA (the "xxxx" is because I'm paranoid to reveal my complete vin)
next line: 327 0000 RXSP44 354 Y
next line: TR 435GA F07881 GMC
next line: the original owners name and the number 40-331

I found a model decoder on GMCPauls, but it only helped me determine C= 2wd, E = v8-gas and 1= 1/2 ton, the rest of the numbers in the vin don't match the GMCPauls numbers.

I'm pretty sure my dad bought it from the original owner in about 1977.

Thanks for any info.

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

C=2WD
E=V8 (so the 327 sounds correct)
1=1/2 ton
(the 57 has me stumped...)
0=I "THINK" it means it was a PA, MD, or NY designated vehicle
Z=Fremont plant (which makes me kinda question the 0 above..??)

The number after the Z should be a 7, I believe - for model year.
The rest=sequential production # - somewhere between 1001 and 10000 for a 67

Really curious about the "57"

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

C = 2WD
E = V/8
1 = 1/2 TON
57 = 115" WHEELBASE
OD = WIDESIDE
Z = FREEMONT, CA PLANT
A = GVW RANGE 6000LBS OR LESS

I checked several sources to come up with this. Don't rely on just one source.

The link is a site where you can order a new SPID

Good Luck.

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

Thanks guys. The numbers following the Z are C1. Is 115" wheelbase a shortbed? I'm assuming it is, cause that's what I've got.

Thanks!

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

Some dumb kid painted the glove box lid, covering the SPID, back in about 1980 - oh wait, that was me! I wonder if I can remove the paint and get the SPID back?

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

The C is 1967 and the 1 starts the build number

Re: SPID vs. VIN vs. Protecto Plate

Try carefully wiping it down with lacquer thinner. On a 67 there may or may not be Mylar protecting it.
