69 C/20 396 HD4sp Dana 60??
So, curious if anyone has one of these. I just bought it a couple of months ago. It's near perfect for 75k, except for cheap repaint and I need to get rid of the camper mirrors and tie downs.
Thoughts on where I should go? The granny tranny drives me nuts, but the 396 is a great engine. I will use it as a shop truck/ tow vehicle. Posted via Mobile Device |

My '67 had a granny 4 speed. Cool tranny to tow with. Swapped it out for a TH400, and now I hate it!!

That is a great tranny. You can pull dang near anything with those.
If the high RPM/low highway speeds is what gets to ya, put bigger tires on the rear end. I just did that to my '70 C20 and it's amazing how much faster it is. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I think it helps. These are great trucks. Easy to customize (if that's your thing), and super reliable.

if you put bigger tires on your truck, your performance has not changed at all - but your speedometer is now reading lower than actual and your odometer is indicating less miles than you're actually travelling. So, you're actually going faster and farther than you think!
So, while it is true that taller tires provide a po-man's highway gear, of sorts, it's kind of hard to tell how much improvement because your speedo and odo are out to lunch once you add tires big enough to make any difference. So, without changing the driven gear in the trans for the speed, you will need to use a gps or measure over a known distance (i.e. anything except your odometer) to calculate your gas mileage. I have a 4.10 also, tires slightly larger than stock. Still can't stand the highway performance, because there isn't any. Plan to swap a fairly heavy duty 2004R to solve the problem. If you don't see much highway driving, it's not a big deal - but where I live, EVERYthing is far away and the highway is the only way to get there. But, really doesn't matter for now, my ol green has been living on jackstands, where it gets excellent gas mileage. I agree with you White70C20 - these trucks are great to build it how you like it.
