The original tank in the 71 GMC I just brought home was a rusty mess inside, truck sat with a 3/4 full tank of gas for 12 years ? Got another tank from a guy parting out a 71 Chevy, got lucky it even had the EEC lines

My question is what is the proper procedure for installing the rubber grommet ? Do you install grommet first onto body ? Or install tank first, then grommet ? Thanks Guys !

Grommet first. By the way where did you buy the grommet? WES

Put original in a bottle of Simoniz vinyl conditioner for a week, made it soft and plyable, it has no cracks so I am trying to reuse it ? So install grommet into body then try to push filler thru it ? I was told to put tank in first, then install grommet onto filler then into body ? Who has done this lately ?

I have done probably 30 or more. Install the grommet, lube the grommet and neck and push the neck through the grommet. Why make more work for yourself?

I do it the same way ^

If your grommet is original get one from Wes above. He carries the original style. I got one a few years ago and still hasn't oxidized. Previous ones lasted one summer and would get all over my hands when removing the cap. Last straw is when I got gas, wiped my forehead and walked in the store with a black smear. Didn't notice it until I got home.
