Rear-end Trouble

OK, spare me the proctologist jokes! I am swapping axles and when I rotated to get the c clips to come out the pinion shaft gears fell out. How in the heck do I get them back in, if they fell out there must be an easy way to get them back I without tearing down the entire carrier. Anyone??

Re: Rear-end Trouble

You just have to ease them back in to their spot and align them with the pinion shaft and axles. No voodoo... just patience. Hope they didn't get all mixed up. Because they wear in a pattern, and it's best to put them back in the same rotation the came out.

Just gotta love humor--esp. from a guy at a time such as this. Reminds me of a friend's saying, "My wife and I don't argue--when she doesn't".

Re: Rear-end Trouble

Yup...

It's happened at least once to anyone that's removed C-clips. I am in that club as well. I just threw 'em in the best I could and buttoned it up.. That rear end lasted for another 5 years until I happend to sell the truck. As far as I know the guy I sold it to didn't have any probs with it either. It wasn't until later that I learend that the spiders should go back in where they came out.

Re: Rear-end Trouble

Well the trick I found was that seeing as how the 2 side gears turn opposite of each other I had to drop one on top and then turn the entire assembly (holding the gear in place) and lining up the opposite side. I ended up pulling the carrier and doing this on the bench. Guess I needed extra practice because I dropped it back in and when I went to put the pinion shaft back in it didn't line up. Out it came again and I made sure they lined up properly this time before putting it back in.

The even funnier part of it was when I went ahhh shoot (something like that), and my son comes over to see what happened. He says, "I don't know anything about rear ends" and I replied "either do I!" The good news is it's all back together again.
