Harvest special K20 ?

[72 K20]

I called about a 72K20 today and the man tells me that it is a rare Harvest special.

I said "it's a what ?"

He said it's a harvest special that was built for farmers,, it has a PTO on the side of the trans that the farmer could run a shaft out the back and bale hay or whatever else might need a PTO. Also, he told me that the front axle was heavy duty for the harvest special truck. From what he was saying it sounds like someone has swapped in a newer single wheel ton front axle. He described the lockouts as being the same size as the center bore of the wheel. When he replaced the front axle wheel bearings he had to get bigger bearings than what was listed for a 72 K20.

I told him that I would have to check into that and that I'd get back to him.
On the cool side it has a fresh 427 in it !!!!

So !! I'm pretty positive that I already know the correct answer but wanted to ask the members here that have more knowledge than I do if this was an actual option or if he has a pieced together truck with a story from the PO !

never heard of it, am interested to see what you find out. Am pretty sure the PTO comes off the t-case though, not the trans.

Sounds like an interesting truck. But the engine would not be original. No 4x4's from 67-72 came with big blocks. I wonder if its a 427 tall deck (truck engine)?

Does the cast case 4 speed not have a cover on the side to bolt on a pto system? I am not sure about the ones back as far as the ones in this conversation, but the ones I do know of that I built in the 90's had that cover on the 3/4 and 1 tons just for that purpose.

Interested. I bought a 70 chassis k20 that had a pto on the side of the 465 also. Had a shaft that ran all the way out the back. My lockouts and front axel seem normal though. Never heard of a harvester special, maybe go look and see if it's on the spid on the glovebox..

Mine for sure was on the side of the trans, had linkage that engaged it.

My neighbor had a 72 C30 2WD wrecker with a manual trans and the PTO mounted to the side of the transmission. Never heard of a harvest special either though.

The SM465 has PTO ports on the passenger and drivers side of the case both, the SM420 that was last used in 67 only had a drivers side port. The front axle he describes sounds like the big hub Dana 44 which was the standard axle in the front of K/20s up until about 76, I've heard them described as HD or 1 ton axles because of the size of the hub but the later real 1 ton Dana 60 axle actually had a smaller hub size.

I'm asking about a truck that I called about today. I was not aware of anyone else inquiring about this.
I read this forum every day and have learned a lot of things about these old trucks that I did not know even after owning 7 or 8 of them. If it's a problem that I have asked about this, have the mods delete it.


After reading the "other " thread , it doesn't seem to have anything in common with what I asked about other than the name "harvest".

Agree here with Blazerman's take on things. It is the external vs later HD internal hub styles if you are looking at pictures. Also the NP-205 transfer case on any K20 has a pto port and the earlier T-221 as well. So a '72 four speed K20 would have three pto ports. But a factory fitted pto does sound like a stretch. Dealer installed, sure as well as upfitters for a variety of needs.

If there is a SPID and documentation of any sort I would really like to see it.
