Question Going to go look at a bed

Alright in about 2 hours I'm going to go look at a bed for my truck, is there anything specific besides rust I should look for? Any specific areas I should be looking at for hidden damage or rust?

Re: Going to go look at a bed

if it doesnt come with a tailgate or you want to use your old one make sure that the piviot points are the same, I have 2 boxes and the tailgates aren't interchangeable. One (i think) is from a '78 and the other one is from a 1 ton with a tank door (year unknown)

Mine doesn't have tailgate so I'll look at this one and see, should I try and find out what year the bed is?

Re: Going to go look at a bed

Just got back from looking at the bed, decided I'm going to buy it. The guy offered up the whole set-up the bed, frame, axle, and gas tank and straps for $100.

Is that the good or bad side?

Re: Going to go look at a bed

Its the bad side, most of it is surface rust, I did check the integrity of the metal and it is fine, it will need wheel arches replaced but that's really it, for $100 in northern Indiana you can't really beat it.

Sell the hubcaps and you'll get half your money back.

I have one hanging on the wall of my man cave, but with the blue bowtie. Love those caps.

He cut the front off the frame so I don't get the front ones.

So you didn't get the front half of the frame?

Yeah I only really need the bed he offered the rest because he didn't feel like taking the bed off the frame. I will ask about the front end though when I go get it.

Re: Going to go look at a bed

I would think you be ahead with the whole frame if possible. Maybe you could sell the frame and the wheel caps

Re: Going to go look at a bed

Yeah the floor is all solid the sides need a little work but way better than what I have now on my truck. It has nice supports under the floor, the bed needs small patches in the sides that are about a 1" by 1". And for the $100 I get the bed, gas tanks, and a 5 lug 12 bolt rear-end so I'm happy with it. I don't think it will need a tailgate, I moved it while I was there and it seemed to work fine and looked to be completely straight.

Re: Going to go look at a bed

So a little update for everyone, I should be going Sunday at 2 in the afternoon to pick up these parts, that's if this snow storm isn't too bad. I will get pictures when it's here so you guys can get a better idea of it. So while I'm at it, what are some good ways to do a bed swap on our trucks?

Ratchet straps crossed in the middle from the stake pockets and a cherry picker.
