on the lookout for a front diff
I just picked up this beautiful K10 and just about everything is in great shape except the closed knuckles on the front axle. From pricing perspective a rebuild is about 1200 so of course I figure I can find a newer open knuckle front axle with disc brakes. If anyone in Washington has a line on one with 4.10 gear (not actually sure if the gear is 4.10 but the engine screams at 65 so im guessing) please let me know. Im watching cl like a hawk now as well. any pointers on what to look for when picking up a used one? Thanks!

Re: on the lookout for a front diff
Nice truck...
you have to match the front and back axle ratios... make sure to find what the rear actually has... best bet is to pull the rear cover and look for the ratio numbers on the ring gear... Any solid axle (from a chevy) will fit but you will need to think about power steering, power brakes and such... I bought mine on CL for $100, with good hubs. Look for a donor truck if you want all of the parts at once. What's wrong with the front, is it leaking?

Re: on the lookout for a front diff
My guess if stock it is a 3.73. Check to make sure then go after an 88 blazer GM 10 bolt front diff unless you are doing serious off roading. The gm10 bolt is about 1/2 wider on each side.
I have info in a thread on my installation on my 67 shortbed fleetside. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=505589 Last edited by dennislbrooks; 12-18-2012 at 07:51 PM. |

Re: on the lookout for a front diff
To MSGROSS:
Im looking to get a replacement because of the wheels are super loose when I have the truck lifted up. Had a mechanic look at it and they said the knuckles needed to be replaced. Seems to drive just fine but have not tested out the 4 wheel drive yet.

Re: on the lookout for a front diff
Let's not turn this into a buy/sell thread though guys... keep that in the classified area.

Re: on the lookout for a front diff
Any GM 1971 to 1982-ish front 4x4 axle is a Dana 44 and is a direct fit with disc brakes. Mid to late 80's became the corporate 10bolt. It was used from 80's to 1991 in Blazer, Jimmy and Suburban. It will still bolt in but I think there are some small differences on the internals. You will need to address the brakes Drum/Drum to Disc/Drum is you go that route.
