60-61 HOOD measurement
I have a 1960 Chevrolet C60 hood that measures 25 1/2" from back corner to side seam joint with the front panel (lights mount in).
I have a 1966 Chevrolet C10 hood that measures 37 1/2" at the same point. Does anyone have a 1960 C10/20/30 hood that they could measure for me from the back corner to the seam/crease/joint where the panels meet? Sure would appreciate it. |

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
If it helps at all a GMC hood measures 39.75 inches from the back to that seam.

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
I gotta figure it for sure since I hope to stretch it to fit my C10.
It's a fire truck hood - rust free - dent free - amazing condition. I've got a couple of 2-6 hoods here that I can get the sections from then I just have to figure out the middle. If anyone can double check and confirm the 39.5" then I'd be grateful. Merry Christmas from Youngwood PA USA! |

I appreciate that Jon!
I hate to be a PIA - but... If you can double check and confirm the 39.5" then I'd be set. |

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
I have been thinking about that, your best bet is finding a junk 60-61 hood that is either smashed in the front, or rusty on the rear corners, and then using that for the new piece in the middle...
I really dont think a 62-66 hood will be any help, their edge is sharper than a 60-61, and the top portion is a little bit narrower... this new hood was created by gm due to visibility complaints about the 60-61 hood...so its top, side and front profile is smaller than the 60-61. another option ,is to cut it in 1/2 and then take 1 piece to a metal shop , and see if you can get them to roll out a piece of metal to bridge the gap that fits the profile of the cut portion. I did this once on a 59 chevy dash that I was customizing, and it came out pretty good...

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
I am not sure which gm used on the hood, I would get a micrometer(?) and measure, unless someone else on here knows for sure...
when I did my dash I just had the guy use the same guage as the pieces I brought him

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
I'm trying to get a pice of 18ga cut to 13 7/8" for the section ...
Adding 14 inches to middle across the entire width. So take away for the cut to split and figure a loss of @ 1/8th inch... Leave 1/8th on either side of the section panel for butt-weld clamps... Leaves 13 7/8" for the section width. Sooo we'll see... Should be fun. |

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
...also use your front clip for a mockup, either pull the springs, or hinges, latch the front of the hood, and line the back up with a nice gap to the cowl.
that way you can make sure it fits right. if you have a piece made for the center have them make it a couple inches big, so you can trim it to fit.

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
I'm liking that mock up suggestion...
I was going to jig everything on 1" angle across some horses to hopefully keep everything in alignment, temporarily clamp small angle in between the sections at various points across the hood, then blend from both sides inward. I could still do that on the mocked up front clip. Thanks Jon! |

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
another thing that should help is the support braces that run front-to back that are bolted in, I think the ones out of your 62-66 hoods are the same

Re: 60-61 HOOD measurement
Update... I got started working the hoods - measuring and checking everything...
I think I can still pull this off, but so far I'm unsure if I would be better off using the center out of the 61 hood and adding it in at the tape line on the 60 C60 hood OR using the C60 for patch panels for the 61 hood. I want to set everything up level on horses, clamp the hood down, brace the inside, and do some more thinking before I saw anything. |
