spray it, dont brush it. brushing leaves stroke marks.

I don't know where you are getting your POR15 but I have done 2 frames with it using a brush and it dried as smooth as glass. No brush marks what so ever.

It also goes farther if you brush it. I did my frame with less than a quart. (one coat)

I paid $32 a quart for mine at a swap meet....

I think this is a good product but I think the jury is still out on the longevity. One of my questions is whether rust will start creeping under it around the bolt holes and areas where you can't get full coverage with it.

I have to spend a little time here on my observations of the POR15 product. First off if you have never used it and you are thinking about it I can't stress enough to read ALL of the instructions, TWICE. Being old school I have to learn all lessons the hard way. Two important points, #1- Wear some "good" rubber or latex gloves. (don't wear the ones you got from your buddy over at the ambulance barn, or that cute nurse at the hospital, they aren't heavy enough) If you don't wear gloves when you apply it you can wear them three weeks later when you go to Uncle Harry's funeral, to cover the POR15 that's STILL on your hands. #2- If your bestest buddy Paul, (you know the one that's always pulling your leg about something) tells you to put a piece of Saran Wrap between the lid and the can after you have used some out of it don't say "yeah, right", do it! Otherwise you'll end up having to cut the center out of the lid with tin snips and pour what's left in the can into a jar. If there is any paint residue around the lip of the can and it sets a week or two you will NOT be able to get the lid off of the can, period! Oh, and another thing, if you wear coveralls to protect your best pair of pants and you drip the paint onto the coveralls they will now be your second best pair of pants. You will not be able to wipe the drip off before it soaks through to your good pants.

I almost forgot.... If you get it on any threads that you have to get a nut or bolt on/off of plan on using a tap, die, or thread chaser to clean the threads up first.

Oh, and still one more thing, be sure and put two coats on it if you are not going to top coat it.

Hope this helps.....

excellent advice.
the one other thing i saw on tv recently is that
butane is heavier than air. this stuff starts curing
as soon as you open the can. if you dont use the
whole can, lightly spray some butane in the can to
displace the air before you seal it. it helps the
shelf life a lot.

Re: Any tips for por15

i never ever remove the lid on a can of POR15

i drill two small holes in the lid one to pour and one for a vent// use sheetmetal screws to seal the holes after you have poured out what u need to use that time

it prollongs the life of the product and if they sealup so tight that u cant remove drill twonew holes and two new screws

if you want to topcoat the POR15 for a finished final product// i spray topcoat over POR15 when it is still tacky about 3/4cured// you geat a fantastic bond on the topcoat

Re: Any tips for por15

I brushed mine with a foam brush and it left no brush marks whatsoever. It looks damn good. A quart did our entire SWB frame. We scraped it with a scraper, powerwashed it, scrapped some more, then sanded it, then brushed it on. If you need pics look at my signature link 689 Short Step

make your own homemade bomb in an unapproved container?? just set it on the shelf and play craps with it ?? i'd rather throw a bit of paint away rather than replace limbs or buildings

Re: Any tips for por15

POR-15 brushed on with a regular paint brush. Wire wheeled the dirt and most of the rust in some places. In other areas I went to the bare metal.
Chemical strength gloves are a must. If you get it on your skin you must wash it off instantly or you will wear it.

Re: Any tips for por15

Do not spray without a respirator.

Do not get it on anything you don't want to paint or destroy (this includes concrete).

Do not get it all over your hands if your wife expects a soft touch.

Do not let the lid seal with product, it will bond shut.

Re: Any tips for por15

i'll throw my 2 cents in, wether your spraying or brushing it on if your not in a really well vented room use a ventilator mask whatever, this stuff has a very strong odor period

also i brushed mine as well and it never left any brush marks, like loc doc said apply a second coat after the first coat dries, i dont know if this happened to anyone else but on my first coat it was soaking into the metal leaving it look thinner in one spot and thicker in another

Brakleen will clean it off your skin, and anything else, for about an hour, after that and you'll have it for awhile.

Re: Any tips for por15

Do NOT spray without a good respirator.
This stuff is cured by moisture-----this is as dangerous or More dangerous than the old Imron paint was.
It sprays well if you use a large enough tip,(and it brushes/rolls well) but like everyone has pointed out. Dont get it On you and be very diligent when spraying.

Re: Any tips for por15

from what I understand a "can" of propane will air up alot more tires than the same size can of air. I guess the same size can will simply fill more tires. I dont know that its smart but I know that its pretty common, or at least it used to be when propane was so cheap..

Re: Any tips for por15

You can remove Por 15 from your skin easily if you use lacquer thinner right away, but thats not good to get on yourself either... better to use gloves. Everythign you want to know about POR can be found here.

Por15 will not adhere to a smooth surface. At least not for long!

Re: Any tips for por15

Here's something written by a friend of mine after he got done stripping, then painting the whole bottom of his car with POR-15. It's great stuff, but it is a gigantic pain in the ass at times.

You'll see my comment at the top of the comments section.

Re: Any tips for por15

Locdock has it down...i have used it on many vehicles, and ive worn it on my hands and face out to nice events because this **** does NOT come off....

this stuff is great, but its not a miracle in a can. i half ass wire brushed some stuff under my jeep, painted it with POR 15 and i can see rust rings creeping back just like they would on anything else. i sandblasted the trailer hitch on my suburban, painted it, it looks like brand new. the can says its not uv inhibited, so youre supposed to paint over it. ive done that too, with good results.

ive got two gallons in my garage now. im using some of it on the underside of a 69 camaro....some of it will go on my 71 C10 when i get the chance.

the stuff likes some tooth, if you know what i mean. its got to have some roughness to grip to, you cant paint it on something smooth...good luck!

ps. lacquer thinner will 'mostly' work..youll still have some residue...

You can also use q-tips for ears to clean the can rim so lid doesn't stick, it's easy to clean perfect using this method or any paint can.
