Who drives there trucks all winter

I have my eye on a 64 SWB 4x4 and this would more less be my daily driver. I am not sure if I want to go this route and put the ol truck through the snow and salt etc. Sounds like torture. So I was curious as to if anyone else drove theres in the winter or year round. Sun, rain, snow, the whole nine yards. If so post some pics of your truck that you drive regardless of the weather.

Not only no but H E double tooth picks NO. Especially if it is a clean GM metal truck. Please do us a favor and list it for sale if you are going to abuse it by driving it in the winter. I live in Michigan and I will walk before I drive my 72. You can't get it back once its gone. Reproduction metal fits like socks on a chicken and decreases the value of the truck.

I hope I am not the only one who feels this way.

This is not something that I would really want to do but these trucks are very hard to come by. I have actually thought about buying it and doing some work to it and selling it. I would really prefer a 81-87 SWB 4x4 to have as an every day driver. That way I wouldn't feel so bad. Those are my thoughts at this time. The truck would need a repaint and some new panels just to get started.

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

I drive mine all winter, salt, snow, rain shine. It had rust when I got it 3 years ago and I slowly collected the replacement panels i'll need to make it nice again. So far I have 2 OE front fenders and repop rockers/floor panels.

Eventually I'll take it off the road and replace the rotted sheet metal....but that would mean I have to stop driving it! lol

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

I drive mine in what little snow we get here in Georgia, but here's a lesson I learned the hard way; the way the emergency brake cables are routed on these trucks, you drive to work in some snow and slush, you park at work, and set the emergency brake. Then, while you're working all day, the snow and slush that got thrown up onto and into the e-brake cables freezes solid, and when you get in the truck to come home, the emergency brake will NOT release.

So don't set the brake on a cold, snowy/slushy day.

Hey Mike I found that out the hard way as well! haha

I started carrying around a little propane torch for times I had to use the E brake instead of just leaving it in gear....like when its idling to warm up.

I wonder if a new set of those rubber boots packed with grease would solve it?

I could not find any stock boots for mine so I used a rubber boot from a accesory power socket to keep mine covered......bought new for the other side and it already had a cover on it. 66 gmc

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

I drive mine everywhere. Mud, snow, rain, dirt, it doesn't matter. What's the point of having such a good truck if you don't use it? I say use them while there are still enough scrap trucks around to find replacement parts when needed, let someone else turn their truck into a museum piece.

I won't this year.
And most likely not ever at all in the winter.
Only if my CRV and my wife's Pilot breaks down at the same time and I have no other choice.

No way!
See this pic...
All that wonderful white-ish crap covering my nice suburban is salt and road grime.
One winter of driving around here ruined my chrome wheels. Even tho I cleaned and waxed them throughly in the fall.

No way Im driving old tin in this crap. They start spreading liquid salt on the roads prior to snow falling, then graniual salt chunks once snow fell.

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

Depends where you live. If you live where it snows alot I wouldn't. I drive mine all winter but it stays sunny and warm most of the time in Oklahoma. If the weather is crappy it stays in the garage I have to many hours rebuilding her!

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

I throughly plan to drive Cecilia (you're breakin my heart!) in the snow this winter. I want to try her 4wd out in snow and ice, slinging a little mud with the kids.

Once I'm done with her she'll have por15 and a rinoliner undercoating that I am hoping keeps the damage to a minimum. If I did fool around and ruin her undercarriage I'd be heartbroken.

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

Before retirement I drove mine 36 miles each way for most of 9 years. Like Clyde65 I left it home on the really horrible icy days, but drove it in snow and sub freezing weather. The cold wasn’t much fun because the heater wouldn’t keep the windshield defrosted, so the vent window had to be left open to see where to point the truck! I had to dress like the younger brother in Christmas story!!

Re: Who drives there trucks all winter

I just wanted to see what others views were on this subject. My intention are to get rid of all the newer vehicles that I have and go back driving some older ones. The oldest one I have now is an 85 Silverado short bed that I am thinking of sell and getting a 64-66 shortbed 2wd. I also would have to have a 4x4 (shortbed no doubt).

I came across this 64 4x4 that is a couple of hours away from me. This would replace my daily driver 01 jeep cherokee. So I am just not sure if I should go this route or not. The old saying is that trucks are made for driving but that is easier said than done to a point. Here is what I am looking at.

Thought I'd share my snow pic. I drive it on the nice winter days, the new truck sees the snow and ice.
