I've got a problem (again)
I left for work this morning and tried to drive my truck and about halfway down the road the truck started to jerk, I let off the gas pedal and then accelerate it stops and when I pull the choke out it stops also. We can't figure it out, but we need some serious help with this because it is extremely irritating.
Edit: I've changed the filter in the carb behind the bolt that connects it to the fuel filter and replaced that fuel filter twice and put one on the fuel pump for an extra filter. It stopped for a while and then started again recently.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
I was having some similar issues with my 292. Replacing the fuel pump worked for me. I didn't think it would help but it did.

Is the heat riser valve working?
THat's the valve in the exhaust manifold that directs hot exhaust up onto the underside of the intake. |

Re: I've got a problem (again)
Check the fuel tank. I too, replaced everything, added filters, this that and the other, and it boils down to three things, not enough air, not enough fuel, or junk obstructing one or the both of those. Start at the source of the fuel, not the destination. I don't mean to offend with this next analogy, but it explains a lot. Don't check the windshield wiper ground if your battery dies and you have no leads! Good luck finding your problem!

Re: I've got a problem (again)
That makes sense. My dad thinks its the fuel sending unit in the tank that's possibly screwed up and we should replace it.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
It very well may be the fuel sender. I just tore my truck apart, and the fuel lines were really nasty inside. I ran a lot of chemicals, coat hangers, and whatnot through them just to see what was actually inside. Remember, the engine mounted fuel pump, is just one big vacuum system. The fuel pump is just a diaphram, and the center of it can dry out and crack, causing loss of fuel pressure and even start to deteriorate iteslf. There's a lot of places to look, but if your fuel tank has rust and garbage in it, you will spend lots of money on fuel lines, fuel pumps, carbs and fuel filters.

Guys the fuel sending unit only sends a signal to to your fuel gauge in the Dash, to let you know if you have fuel and how much.

Not the actual fuel sending unit, but the tube that goes down into the tank and has the sock looking thing on the end of it.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
What was the weather like ? Was it damp outside? I am thinking you may have an ignition problem. Damp plug wires will cause this. A good way to test them is to spray them with a water bottle and put the engine under a load. Is it an automatic or manual trans? If it is an automatic trans, you can give it a little brake torque to simulate a load.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
I had similar symptoms on two different trucks. On the '71 I cured it by replacing the cap and rotor. The rotor had a whole worn in the center of the metal spring and the button coming out of the cap that touched it was almost gone, this was with Hei ignition.
The second truck, my '67, the problem was caused by the sock in the tank on the pickup tube falling apart and being sucked up in the pickup tube. Another possibility would be the rubber hose on the suction side of the fuel pump having a hole in it or collapsing.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
I believe I found my problem, the vacuum advance isn't even producing a vacuum when I hooked up a hose to a vacuum pump. So, I believe my vacuum advance is the problem and I'm either gonna replace just that or I found an hei distributor that I could replace it with which I think is the route I'm gonna go.

Re: I've got a problem (again)
Well that vacuum advance can certainly cause those problems! You won't be disappointed switching to hei as its so much easier with all the room between the distributor and firewall!

My 250-6 does the same thing when cold. A little choke til she gets warmed up and then seems to run smoothly.
