Doors,what to do????

I have a 72 long bed. What brand and where to get new doors that fit? Or do I try and reskin the ones I have? Well the right door is the only one that is useable . What do you put on the inside of the door to stop the rust or kill the rust?

Look on the parts board or better yet post a want to buy ad. Good used are your best bet as the aftermarket quality is not up to par with OE.

I had the same problem with my doors. I waited and waited looking for good doors, I even found a pair in ca. The owner kept telling me he was going to bring them back and after 4 months I just bought new ones. They fit great and am very happy. I used CPI Truck in Al.

I use POR 15 on the inside. You can reskin a door fairly easy without much welding but if the inner bottom panel needs to be replaced which most will, your in for a good amount of metal work; cutting, welding & grinding!

I've done 3 pairs of doors so far and it's no picnic by any means, just depends on your skill level.

I have no experience with repro doors myself.

I kinda liked the "doors" fashioned from exhaust tubing that the poster with the 68 junkyard save fashioned.....just kidding! Eastwood makes a good rust convertor. Poke around for a promo code before you order.

I've heard so many bad things about after market doors. I've heard that all come from the same place just a different names on the box. As for the cutting and welding that's what I do. Work on heavy equipment. I won't to do these one time. Don't won't to have problems later on down the road.

Not sure what to say about the doors but once you find some you like I would coat the insides with rust bullet and be done.

What condition is the rest of the truck in? If I had and original GM metal truck that was solid, then I would keep searching until you find a set of good clean GM doors.

On the other hand, if the truck has had rockers and cab corners and most of the floors replaced and having all GM sheet metal is not important, then I would go with aftermarket doors. I bought a set of Goodmarks and they did not fit well. It was a lot of work to get them to match the body lines of the cab and shut correctly. Even after doing as much as I could with them, they still shut hard. I blame some of this on new door seals but not all of it. The area below the lower body line did not match at all with the cab corner. This was before I replaced the rockers and cab corners.

you could look into N.O.S. which is "New Old stock". these were genuine gm body parts that were never assembled. good chance they are all gone. and if they are still around, be prepared to pay for them.

The rest of the truck has the usually rust not to bad. Rockers,cab corners and thr rear cab supports. The old truck has been in the family sence 1973. It's what I learnd to drive in and courted my wife in. Married for 23 years. Got to put it back as best as I can.

There's a lot of differnts in working with sheet metal than 1/2" to 2" metal that I normally work with.

i replaced my rockers, cab corners and driver side floor pan. its a task but not extremely difficult. i wasn't pleased with the replacement parts i got though. took a lot of massaging.

You're in a good area to find usuable factory doors. How BAD are yours? They sell the inner and outer bottoms and they seem to be a good heavy gauge metal.

I noticed this for both the first gen camaros and our year trucks when I was looking at parts, but the actual door skins that are sold are better/heavier gauge than the skins on the doors themselves. If you google door skin replacement there's quite a few videos out there on it, it doesn't look too hard at all.

I bought what were supposedly the best new doors in 2006 and they're too thin. I bent the passenger side door at the door handle by shutting it too hard. I kept my original doors. They just need some patches... I will someday be putting them back on the truck. I ended up getting an excellent fit on the doors, but I'm not happy at all with the metal gauge and quality.

What panels did you buy? Whole skins? Inner/outer bottoms?

It all depends on your doors. If the whole bottom is bad, cut it all out and replace it, however, if you have just spotty rust, like in the corners, I would just replace the areas that need it. Take your time, measure 5 times, cut once. Take your time welding too.

The biggest difference with sheet metal vs heavy steel is heat. Sheet metal warps real easy, so you only want to do small welds at a time. I don't usually do more than 1/2 to 3/4" depending on gauge, (real thin metal means just tacking,) then move to a different area, and repeat. Eventually the whole seam is done. You can also use body working tools to flatten welds while hot if you have them and are familiar with their use.

Don't forget that when you grind, it can heat up too much and warp as well. Take your time, and grind lightly across large sections at a time. Patience is required.Otherwise just be gentle with the grinder and don't let the metal get too hot. I've also used a wet rag if I'm trying to save paint or sensitive sections nearby.

OE doors are always the best bet, even if you have to repair original parts. Knowing they're the originals helps it to remain the same truck you love rather than a new truck with some of your old trucks parts.

I bought inner bottoms. The rust on the outside is just in the corners. Have some 16 and 14 ga p n o metal to use on the outside. The cab and doors fenders go to the blaster (glass) to get cleaned up for the repairers on Thursday
