cummins swap info needed

I am looking to do a cummins swap in my 1988 v 30 4wd. I have found a low mileage 6bt out of a 1991 dodge truck. I am looking for advice about what transmission would be a good choice. I would like to go with an automatic and reuse the np 205. Trying to keep the cost to a minimum. I am planning on using this truck to plow snow and tow my compact tractor, so reliability is a factor.
Thanks for the help.

Cheapest would be a dodge trans a t case,A gm trans i would use a turbo 400 or a 4l80 but the adapter plate and rest of the swap parts are pricey.

The 400 dont like the 6b to much I would go with a 48rh dodge trans or some kind of a alison maybe a 540 not sure if that is an over or not. I would go over to 4btswaps.com and ask there too

Re: cummins swap info needed

Take a look at 4btswaps.com they have a ton of info on this swap for the 6bt. Istarted a swap like this in a 2wd crew cab and used the stock dodge trans but in hindsite using a different trans would have been a better idea. I sold the project before I could finish it.

Thanks for the advice. I want to do this right the first time, hate doing things twice.

Unfortunately, the 6BT is very hard on automatics (due to the amount of torque it puts out at low RPM's). If an auto is a must, have it built to the max and install a low stall torque converter.

Personally, I would go with the NV4500 or NV5600 but you'll have to shift.

Re: cummins swap info needed

I've been lurking on 4bt swaps and it seems like the nv 4500 is the most popular way to go. I don't mind shifting, just thought an auto would be nice if it would live behind a 6bt. Thanks for the reply, i appreciate all the good advice.

Re: cummins swap info needed

I put the NV4500 from a dodge in my swap and then used a NP205 Transfer case out of a pre 1993 cummins truck. It has the right spline count and is still passenger side drop. The NV4500 that came behind a cummins in the dodge is a 29 spline output shaft. Autos and Gas trucks are different spline count.
