newbie question. 6lug->5lug, axle swap?

Hi guys

Im new to these trucks.

have a fresh 3.08 5lug rear end, but need to go to 3.73.

found a few 6 lug rears on craigslist. but i need the 5 lug....

could i just swap my 5 lug axles into the new 6 lug rear end and put those 6 lugs into my 3.08 rear and sell it?

thanks

Re: newbie question. 6lug->5lug, axle swap?

The only 67-72 oem 6-lug rearend that will directly swap your 71 axles,... is the 1970 6-lug rearend.
(I assume you have coil springs,... and not leaf springs)

But there were two widths of rearends in the 1970 model year.
Some were the width of the earlier 67-69 trucks, which is narrower.
You will have to measure to be sure.

The 71-81 4x4 trucks had 6-lug rearends, but they were set up for leaf springs.
These rearend will allow you to swap your 5-lug axles,... but the brackets will be wrong.

but thats good to know. i would have never guessed that the widths were different from 67-72

Re: newbie question. 6lug->5lug, axle swap?

I don't know about the date stamp.
Just measure your 71 rearend.
The other rearend will have to be the same width.
The 71-72 (and late 1970) rearend is approximately 1-1/2" wider than the 67-69 rearend housing.
There are a TON of threads on here about this same question.
Do a google search at the top of the page.
