4x4 Question
i have question... after locking it in and using the 4wheel drive it is tough to get it back into 2wheel and you cant unlock the hubs...its like it gets stuck and does not want to go into 2wheel and doesn't want to release out of 4wheel drive...is there a trick to these old units. This is the first i have ever owned or operated an old manual lock in/out unit...Merry Christmas

Only problem I can think of is if the driveline gets in a bind, usually from being in 4WD on a hard surface (bad idea). If you're on a soft surface and it still binds, try backing up a few feet, & maybe turn the wheels side to side a little as you go back into 2WD.
Worst case if it's bound up badly and you can't get it out of 4WD, jack up one front tire. It might jump as it unloads.

What I found worked best was once 4wd was no longer needed, get the truck just rolling, push the clutch in and put pressure on the shifter handle until it falls into 2wd. Now this was with a manual truck. I suppose a similar method could be figured out with an auto.
You probably won't be able to unlock the hubs until it is back in 2wd. If I recall correctly, the original sticker in my 67 said specifically to put it back into 2wd before unlocking the hubs. This is also preferable because you can drive around with the hubs locked in and put it 4wd when needed - like in snowy conditions for instance.

one time jacked up the front wheel and as soon as got the pressure off it it slipped right into 2wd. have pushed and pushed and it stays stuck...the last three times i have put it in 4wd i have fought and fought to get it back out of 4wd. finally put it in reverse and eased out on the clutch while pushing forward into 2wd and that seemed to work...is it just because it is old or maybe gear grease...have not checked that in a while.

What year is it? Reverse, as you mentioned, worked well for me too.
