4th gear sputtering

Got a weird 1 for y'all. My truck was running like crap so I did some trouble shooting and found you my timing had moved so I redid the timing and it ran great. This morning I drove it to work and when it goes into 4th gear ( 700r4) it's falls on its face completely, it won't rev past 1000 rpm's and will actually cut off.. It doesn't do it everytime also if I restart the truck it will run fine

Re: 4th gear sputtering

That could be a number of things based off of what you described. Next time you drive it, try not using 4th gear and see if it does it in third. It sounds like something heat related like an ignition module (if you are running GM HEI) or possibly fuel vapor lock. Does the truck have cat converters? Keep an eye on your temp and oil pressure when this is happening.

You are in good hands. There are a lot of very smart people on these boards and we all are glad to help. This may take some time to narrow down.

The weirdest thing is that it almost seems like its starved for gas but I already changed the fuel filter ... At 1st when it started it would do it in 1st gear but after I did the timing it now only does it in 4th gear .. My oil pressure and temp look normal when this is going on .. Im going to change out the vacuum from the distributor to the carb, after that I may start looking at my ignition system , just weird that it doesn't do it all the time

I was thinking that cause the fuel filter isn't keeping fuel in it ... Luckily it's mounted on my frame and it's my hard to swap out
