Turnsignal Switch
Trying to go back to the factory signal. Anybody got a pic of this turnsignal switch and/or what it plugs into? Does it plug into the main harness or what? http://www.classicparts.com/1960-62-...ctinfo/53-506/

Re: Turnsignal Switch
Hi rockdogg,
What year truck & column are you working on? I noticed the switch in your link is for 1960-62 and those years have the switch mounted to the outside of the steering column down under the dash. The under-dash wiring harness should have a corresponding triangular shaped plug that fits directly into the switch. And there's a small push-pull cable that runs from the switch, up through the column, and hooks to the lever / canceling mechanism up at the top of the column. The 63-up setup is considerably different. Those years have the turn signal switch & canceling mechanism all mounted up in the top of the column. A group of wires (that's part of the switch assembly) runs down through the column and has a couple of semi-circular plugs that plug directly into corresponding sockets in the under-dash harness. If you're dealing with a 63-66 column in a 60-62 truck or vice versa, you'll have to stick with the style of turn signal switch that fits your column and adapt the wiring plug accordingly. |

Re: Turnsignal Switch
Its a 1962 with the original column, when i got it had an aftermarket assembly on it. Im thinking the previous owner didnt know how to repair the original assembly.

Re: Turnsignal Switch
The 63 and up would look like these plugs.

Re: Turnsignal Switch
The turn signal switch on the '62 mounts at the top of the base of the steering column near the firewall and attaches to a cable that goes up to the cam mounted inside the column under the steering wheel. The only wires that go into the column are the horn wire and possibly the light for the gear indicator if you have an automatic transmission.
There should be a triangular connector on the main dash harness that connects to it. If you don't have that, there are wires that are probably connected to some aftermarket wiring harness. I will take a few pictures in a few minutes when my phone gets enough charge to let the flash work so you can see the color of the wires and where they go. I know that American Autowire can get the connector for the switch, because it comes with their harnesses, or you can get it from American Classic if you order more than $20 worth of stuff from them. The plug itself is only $1.25 from them. |

Re: Turnsignal Switch
Well, I couldn't get a good picture of the switch, but the wires are pretty simple. if you look at the switch with the single pin at the top so it looks kind of like this (Had to center it to look right.):

Re: Turnsignal Switch
Man i know what most of you guys are going throw.I've been battling my column in all of my 1964--66 trucks. There just plain hard to keep turn single switches alive in mine and there getting expensive.I just found the answer we all have been looking for about 5 years ago i was working on one of my 1967 3 door suburbans I had to pull the steering column out wo work on the under dash.after i fixed it i felt i would clean the column.the more i cleaned the more it looked like my 1964--66 truck column.took steering wheel off found out NO more little springs or clips it has a plastic round little tray and a hell of a lot easyer to work with plus it has emergency flashers on the side of the column.I've yet to try it on one of my trucks sence i retired my 1965 and went to my new 1972 chevy work truck.
found out it uses the same emergency brake cables and brake handle as my 1964-66 If it dose work all i need to change is the round plug to work with my factory fuse plug and i'm set NO more Little springs hate them dam things and when i went to the power steering on the frame.I have to shorten the steering rod so i took mine out. and wow it was the same size with the collapsible steering knuckle so that the rod dose not go into your chest from a head on car crash.another safety tip.But i think the 1967-69 might be the same just look to see about the hand brake. One thing i like about the hand brake if you ever lose your brakes the hand brake allows you to control some kinda stopping instead of using the foot one just look into it I don't think they ever changed the columns from 1967--72 mabey the hand brake might work on the 1972 none tilt columns |
