60-66 Models - Best available? What brands are available?

Are there any model makers that make models of 60-66 Trucks.

Self build, or prebuilt diecast types ?

Links, photos and brands would be appreciated.

Revell stepside 2 n 1 kit on Kyosho RC chassis.

There’s not a whole lot to pick from. The latest releases are from Revell. The 64-66 shortbed fleetside and stepside kits have been released in several versions over the last 10 years or so. The earliest of these stepside kits came with a boat in the same kit.

Prior to that AMT and perhaps SMP released “annual” kits of the long bed Chevy fleetside trucks during the year of current real truck production. The earliest of these kits were essentially disassembled promotional models with extra customizing parts included. More importantly they were molded in styrene plastic which did not warp. Excellent and NOS kits can regularly be found on Ebay, but popularity and condition can drive prices well beyond $150 for prime examples.

Genuine promotional models were preassembled and generally only available through new car dealership sales departments. Sadly most of these were produced in polyvinyl acetate, which warped badly over time. They still bring big money, but aren’t very practical for casual modelers wanting a replica of their own truck. Promos are usually so expensive only collectors can afford them, and so badly warped they don’t make good models for building. Fortunately in the Chevy truck line I’ve seen some perfect promo examples of 64-66 Chevy trucks, leading me to assume they were molded in styrene.

The above represents the primary sources for obtaining 1/25th scale pickup models today. Occasionally a resin replica will pop up on Ebay. Modelhaus offered kit models up until about 10 years ago, but the tools wore out and they don’t want to invest in new ones. They do however still offer parts like grilles, bumpers, and some interior parts.

The other option is die cast trucks in both 1/24th and 1/18th scale. Some like the Franklin Mint models can be very expensive. While they make very attractive display models, almost none look as realistically accurate as the 1/25th plastic kits due to the nature of production. Most die cast offerings normally have body gaps that in scale would be ½” – 1” wide, a result of the thick material being used and operating features like doors, hoods, and tailgates.

GMC models and pieces were available at one time through Modelhaus. I had spare early and late grilles, front bumper, and early and late hoods left over and handed them over to another forum member that is tied in with a professional casting expert. With any luck those parts may once again become available.

if your looking to build a model factory stock looking then in my opinion look for a dealer promo. the down side is they cost alot unless they have been painted and glued like many years ago and it needs a rebuild like this 62 i bought. it was around $36 on ebay and looked horrible i stripped it down and repainted it. took me about 40 hrs but the result was nice to display. otherwise a mint condition one will cost about $200 or more.

I can't remember what brand it was but actually found this one at Walmart of all places. It's diecast, and I took it apart to "lower" it. It also came with a camper shell!

If you’re willing to venture outside the standard 1/25th plastic scale models, these diecast trucks were produced in 1/43rd scale. The first two 1961’s were marketed by Road Champs in 1998 as part of a before and after set. One was “as cast” and the other was painted.

Both are long beds, but have screw together chassis and would be easy to take apart for parts switching.









They were also apparently sold as singles. There’s one currently listed on Ebay:

The black 1960 tractor cab was made by ERTL and came in a package advertised as Mr.Gasket.





Depending on enthusiasm level it could be chopped up and made into a pickup.

The 1:24 scale trucks were not boxed. Solid colors were $16, & 2-tone colors were $24. I looked underneath and found this info:

Motormax Toy Factory, LTD

The larger 1:18 scale truck is made by Sun Star. It was priced at $49. The guy said it also comes in red & a dark gray primer looking color.

His business is just a side job, & he only sells at certain shows in the Southeast. He said most of the stuff stays boxed in storage & only becomes available at the show. I haven't tried to research them yet, so you may be able to find them through other sources. I know I've seen the Sun Star trucks in toy stores once before.

First one I opened and started and gave up, second one still intact but no outer wrapper, third still sealed. Took awhile to find was going to use for color match but gave up. I like the ones I can't screw up.

Mark that is a sweet collection. Here are a few I have collected. The panels are GMC. The hot wheels shortboxes are 1962 chevy. The green one is a Sun Star 1965 that I found at a yard sale.LOL. Revell made the 1964 short fleet. Amt made the 1960 chevy. I started to make the 60 into a unibody years ago and never finished it. I guess I should finish them one of these days.
