getting ready for crossmember swap
I think i finally have all the pieces to rebuild the"new" front crossmember for my 68.
I got a crossmember from an 85 burb. All new bushings and ball joints are sitting in the shop waiting. I'm still debating on powdercoat or paint?? I' m also wondering what kind of brake line issues I'm going to have when I put it in. If anyone has advise please chime in. I'm going to break it down tonight, guess i need to decide on paint or powdercoat soon. |

Re: getting ready for crossmember swap
Leave the '68 crossmember in your truck.
Run the rebuilt '85 a-arms and steering linkage. Use the '68 steel brake lines on the original crossmember. Bend up a couple new lines to a 71-72 M/C and prop valve. ECE rubber brake hoses. No need to change the crossmember or engine mounts.

Re: getting ready for crossmember swap
its the exact same crossmember, no need to swap it unless yours is damaged or you've turned the new one into a dropmember.

Re: getting ready for crossmember swap
Good advice here, definitely leave the original crossmember in there! I made the mistake of swapping mine for the later model, don't do it!

Re: getting ready for crossmember swap
I guess if you aleady have the motor pulled out then its not that big of a deal to take it out and bolt in a new one. Its an easy way to swap in disc brakes from a newer truck. Just drop in a whole new crossmember, brakes and all in one big package.
