Help, I want my motor to look like this.

I want my motor to look like this. What kind of paint should I use? Is it exterior car paint with gloss on it? Will that withstand the heat of the block?

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

This was done using the Ceramic from Duplicolor. Sorry its the wrong brand, guys! That is actually a correct 1959 Ford engine color.

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

I was wrong, mine was duplicolor ceramic not krylon...... I know my pics dont show how shiny it is ( camera phone and poor lighting ) but it is actually very bright and shiny..... I love the ceramic paints

I even baked the paint on in an oven on all my small parts, made it even better

Yes, the duplicolor ceramic is the best I've seen so far. You can get it in pretty much every parts store. The cap is labeled "Chevy Orange". There are other colors that look similar on the cap, but they don't come out the right color.

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

no job in a spray can will get you that nice clean glassy gloss, I had the guy who helped me build my 327 use what he uses to paint his engines it comes in small cans or gallon size, I'll get back to you tomorrow about what exactly he uses he mixes it to the right viscosity, actually comes out VERY consistent, the valve covers were painted at a separate time from the engine as well.. and yes he uses a paint gun.

Exactly! Makes me want to do the same thing! What process have some of you used in the past? Remove everything you can, degrease, clean, dry, then paint?

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

Just put a bunch of shinny stuff on it and you will hardly even notice the paint on the motor... Just my opinion

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

I have painted many engines with straight automotive paint, either single stage or base/clear with zero problems. The trick is to make sure everything is clean, and then clean it two or three more times, dont paint under a bolt head or a mating surface for the exhaust, water pump intake, fuel pump, etc. The hardened paint helps with clean up down the road as dirt and oil dont stick like it does to aerosol paints. hope this helps.

Re: Help, I want my motor to look like this.

Depending on what you are doing, but on solid colors you can usually get just as good of a paint job out of a rattle can as you can with a paint gun. It's not as easy, but it can be done.

We've all seen cars that people painted with rattle cans that look terrible, and I was convinced at one point that you could never do near as good of a job with a rattle can until someone showed me an entire car painted with a rattle can the right way. Anyone would have been hard pressed to tell the difference.

I have had great results using VHT engine paint and VHT engine clear. The clear makes all the difference.

I took a factory color valve color in and they mixed me a can, I don't know if the code is on it but I will look. I had 2 grey valve covers and both were original and they were different shades of grey so like the green, there are variations.

I hope you got another 50 bucks to spend.
You need to replace that oil cap on the drivers side valve cover with a breather. Just the pcv won't stop the oil leaks. You need somewhere for air to get into your motor so the pcv can suck out the fumes.
You need to replace that rubber fuel hose with a steel tubing line. Big fire waiting to happen.

Thank you for the compliments!! I painted everything except for the bolts which were new and the chrome. The headers came ceramic coated but everthing else I cleaned, sanded and painted with rustoleum gloss black and Chevy orange.
