close call

I just spent 4 and a half hours washing and waxing my '69 ford truck (Yes, I know its a Ford, but I spend most of my money and time on the '69 chevy) and I decided to take it up town for a cruise. However, just yesterday I pulled of the mufflers to see what kind of gas mileage I would get since my current mufflers aren't anything with a lot of flow (Only get less than six miles to the gallon). So, I was cruising down the main street and I went to go around a back drive that goes past Autozone and Sears, and after I turn in I see a cop turn in about a 100 to 150 feet back. You could tell he was staying back to see if I would really get on it. I had to coast at an idle for about 100 yards into a grocery store parking lot to pretend like I was going inside. After I went in and got a pop, I came out and the cop was not in sight. I had no idea how I would get home since I would have to drive directly through town. Luckily, though, I had left the mufflers and the whole back half of the exhaust hanging under the truck and I was able to just move it enough to get it to slide back together. Then all was quiet.
Moral of the story: There's NO better sound in the world than a big block breathing through straight pipes.

i know the feeling except it was with my weezing 250, i had a leak between my exhaust manifold and pipes and it sounded mean until i had to step on the clutch to keep it from sounding like it was hicuping, exactly what happens when that occurs?

Brad, been there, done that.
On the old longhorn (the blue one) I had a screwed up pipe for a while on one side, I had clamped a pipe when I should have pushed it on a but more, anywyays I hade basicly crimped it and then it wouldn't go on all the way. Any time I wound it over 3000 RPM, the pipe would get blown off and I'd have a straight header. I had to put it back on all the friken time. (4.56 gears makes you see 3000 on the tach qute a bit)
i only ran it like this for a few days, but I had to take a 125 mile round trip all 3 of those days.
Don't worry bout the ford truck, at least it is a 67 - 72 ford which is the best looking ford truck of all times hands down. (IMO anyways)

These cops today just don't have the sense of humor that they
used to have.

I had straight exhaust on my Sub when it still had the 250/powerglide combo....that is until my grandmother thought it was a tractor coming up the driveway! I swapped the 'vette 350/th-350 in soon there after.....voila 350 w/ straight pipes! LOL My girlfriend (now my wife) loved it, but the cops disagreed....oh well.

Do you guys think that if I used a piece of pipe to fill in where the mufflers are it would quiet the truck enough to keep the cops from bothering me? Or should I go to Autozone and get a set of cheapo glasspacks. I am looking at getting better mileage than I am sound. I did see an improvement in mileage with running straight pipes that dump just behind the cab.
thanks for all your help

A pipe won't do anything at all...you need a muffler of some sort...be it a glass pack or something else.

slightly OT, but the Festiva's whole exhaust fell off of, it rusted out right after the manifold. it actually sounds pretty mean, but no worse than the ricers. I think i'll leave it that way as I picked up some power, and what cop would check a Festiva? I'll still probbaly sling a muffler under it to keep up appearances
