Blazer Tank Install Question

I just purchased a 21 gallon Blazer tank from GMC Paul's to put in the rear of my 72 C-10. I have already cut out the small cross-member for the spare and should be ready to drill holes to mount the new tank. The main questions I have are:

The two straps that came with the kit have the ends bent different directions. How exactly is this meant to connect to the frame.

Each of the two short sides of the tank have a wedge shape that is flat on the top. Is this meant to mount flush to the bottom of the frame?

Will I have to cut the bed cross-member before I put the bed back on.

I don't have my digital camera with me or I would have posted some pics to make it easier to see what I am talking about. The kit came with absolutely no install directions.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I just installed mine last week and I will post pics tomorrow. I left my digital at work.

I just bent one of the straps to match the other. I also folded the eye hole end of the strap over and redrilled the hole to shorten the strap by about an inch. I installed mine with the bed off.

I'm trying to get the tank as high as possible, now I'm wondering if I'm going to have to notch my bed cross bar to fit over the tank. I may have gotten mine to high by using the top of the wedge on the bottom of the frame.

I plan on setting the bed on the frame Monday to see, but if it is to high I plan on notching the bed. It will be some metal work, but a cool custom touch never hurts.

MStokes: where are you putting your fuel door?

Pictures would be great droptop. There are a lot of posts on the board dealing with opinions on moving the tank or not, but not a lot of details on the exact mounting of the tank.

Right now I am leaning towards running the filler through the wood bed floor and mounting it flush in the bed. I have a long ways to go though before I have to make a decision. Attached is a photo of the current state of my truck. Along with the gas tank kit, I just got all the front end suspension and steering parts I need to get the front end together

Too fast on the mouse button. I got to looking at the options to post an attachement and it doesn't look like it is going to let me do it from home.

The wedge-shaped notches are the support that is used to hold the tank in place -- the straps will push those two wedges up against the bottoms of the frame rails.

I know this, because I just installed the identical tank today in my 71 blazer! Whoo hoo! Only 3 more wires to my TBI system!

I installed mine the same way. There is not enough room between the tank and bed floor for a filler to connect. There is not even room for the marine filler less the hose for the connection. What did I do wrong? I was hoping to come straight up in the bed floor.

Hey 00droptop is that a poly tank or a metal tank? It seems there are different "blazer" tanks.
Thanks
Dave

tanks

Custom 68: It is a 21 Gal. Blazer tank from GMC Pauls.

I thought of doing the stainless tank thing, but for my daily driver I think the Blazer tank is a better choice.

I'm saving the high dollar tank for my next project. I'm going all out on the next one.

You can bend the filler neck if it is a poly tank. Just use a heat gun and heat the base around the neck. I used a big socket that fit over the neck and a 12 inck exstion for leverage.

Hope that helps some one out.

Thanks for the extra photos droptop. I just got home this evening after being gone all week. I'll try to take a closer look at mine this weekend if I get a chance.

I was thinking the straps were meant to run parallel to the axle. It looks like you ran them the other way?

Anyone else with comments on the amount of bed cross member that has to be removed?

It looks like the board will let me post a photo now so I'll give it a try.

I think the straps are intended to go side to side, but I just prefer the front to back mounting. It appears to be fine that way.

Nice looking frame. Your off to a good start.
