Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
Hi all,
Just done a couple of searches using "Towhitch" and "Towbar" and got zilch. Now I know on one hand it does not look cool, but on the other it is a functional. When we get our pickup truck (which will happen) the idea is to tow the teardrop trailer as often as possible to various shows. The truck I am investigating at the moment does not have a tow hitch or towbar. How do you guys tow with your pickups ? Where do you fix the tow hitch to etc? Any photos of installation, especially what goes on underneath and out of sight, will be hugely appreciated. Have some pics..... If you have any of your own with teardrops behind 60-66 trucks, please post up here. |

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
I used a Valley adjustable frame mounted receiver hitch under mine, no pics as my kids destroy any camera I buy in days, and I've found my mobile pics are not good. What I like about it as it tucks up under the factory bumper enough that you gotta look for it.

I just got a hidden hitch from Airbagit, I'll be towing a small travel trailer with mine. Also got a flip up license plate frame from a board member.

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
Mine is kinda custom made, but it is a 2" receiver and its mounted to the frame. Its hard to say what its rated too, but I wouldnt tow more than a tear drop or my little 4x8 flat trailer.
I will take some of mine and post them later.

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
That didnt tale too long. I put my truck up on jack in the shop today to fix a tranny leak so it make taking pics of the hitch easy.
It is built from 2" angle and its attached to the bumper mounts. Its not very heavy duty, but it works for what I need. This was on the truck when I got it. If you need more pics or info, please let me know.

That is really cool.
Thank you very much. I am wondering about flipping the bumper while I am at it (once I have a truck) so that the hitch can be fitted a bit higher. |

I have not seen that done, but you may need to relocate your license plate if you do. You can get a drawbar that goes into the hitch with a 4" or 6" rise or drop to make up the difference. I have a 2" rise/drop hitch in mine and its a little low. A 4" rise would be better for me.

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
You might get some ideas here......
http://www.rigidhitch.com/products/T...20HITCHES.aspx A class II would be just fine for pulling your teardrop. Also keep in mind that the rear of the frames of the trucks are the same width from '63-'87. So if you happen to find a ready made hitch for a different year truck, it will likely fit. If you do build your own, the receiver tube, is a special size tube that will allow a 2" stinger to slide in easily. Here in the states, you can buy just that piece if needed.

That's my plan too, with a removable draw bar which will be replaced by a licence plate holder when not in use - keeps the hitch hidden

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
I don't have a dead on photo of my hitch but it is located below the bolt on roll pan. The receiver too, is bolt on, as both have to come off to get the bed removed. I haven't pulled more than about 1200# total but it sure beat putting it all in the bed.

This thread has some good info too. I used the same Valley hitch that TR65 used and it fit great. Had to elongate a couple frame holes but nothing major. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Tow hitch, towing, show and tell me more please.
NEXT QUESTION......
With a tow hitch on a '60 Fleetside, could you still get a tank fitted between the rails?? So that one can clear out the space in the cab ? Once again, any photos welcome too. Thanks, Rian. |
