Removed Bed
I removed the bed yesterday on my truck and was wondering if their is supposed to be any type of cushion between the bed and frame.Classic Parts of America lists bed mounting pads on their site,rubber pads between frame and bed.Mine was only riding on a washer.http://www.classicparts.com/1954-87-...ctinfo/13-556/

You can order a shim pack from most suppliers (rubber 1/4" thick). Most of these trucks list a pinch. I used the shim pack and made some "adjustment" shims with an old inner tube. Lined things up perfect.

I dont know the answer to your question but IMO unless you are building a 100% original show truck I would put rubber betweent the frame and bed regardless if it was there originally. Metal to metal contact cannot be a good thing over time.

Have the cab mounts been replaced? The previous owner might have noticed the cab/bed didn't line up (cab was low from old bushings) so they removed the rubber to drop the bed a tad, or they removed the bed and didn't know rubber was supposed to go there...

My 69 never had any pads between the bed cross sills and the brackets on the frame. It has a wood floor. I don't know if the steel floor beds used pads, but I doubt it. I would think metal to metal contact would improve grounding also.

From what I understand, the bed mounting pads were never there from stock. They are an aftermarket addition only. I have probably taken apart 15 or so of these trucks over the years and never come across them.

My bed has a noticeable list at the very rear of the truck. The driver's side rear corner is almost an inch higher then the other side. Now up at the cab the passenger side is a tad lower than the driver's side - so there might be some twisting that pronounces the difference. I've looked under there and there are no shims anywhere - it's all frame contact. SO... I haven't tackled this yet but I'm scared there might be a little twist to the frame or a rear frame horn behind the axle - because the running gear appears to be true.
My question is: If I remove the bed and in the absence of an obvious problem that is causing this, I just shim the bed to make it level.... does that make me a bad person? |

The stepside bed I bought for my '67 had rubber pads in the bag with the bolts and such so we used them when we put the bed on.
Also there was a ground wire on the underside of the bed that I hooked to the frame.

Thanks for all the responses.The reason I removed the bed was to replace my trailing arm bushing and clean up the frame.All the body bushings and track bar bushing are done already.I'm going to find some rubber washers and run a ground wire like Shyguy suggested.
