Restoring (repainting a horn cap) 69-72 style
Any tips on how best to do this?
I have one that will need a coat of vinyl spray but that pesky bowtie in the middle is taking all the fun out of that. LOL Need maroon so buying a new one isn't an option. I tried to tape off the bowtie but the tape isn't even sticking to it. The blue insert and silver trim is fairly good but maybe I should just repaint the whole thing? What's a good choice to replicate the blue? Any help appreciated.

I am not sure how to actually do it but the bowtie can be removed. Drilled out from the back side I think. As for the rest of the cap, a coat of clear does wonders.
Please don't try what I said on a rare colored cap unless you know exactly how to do it. Maybe someone here has done it before and can tell you how to do it.

Forn the blue, Pick a blue that matches. Dilute it with paint thinner, ues a eyedroper to fill in blue and let thinner evaporate. May take a couple times.

Re: Restoring (repainting a horn cap) 69-72 style
I thought it looked like a seperate piece. Nothing on the back showing how it's attached. Would be super easy to do if I could pop that out.
Can't find anything using search. Anyone know the secret to removing one of these?

Re: Restoring (repainting a horn cap) 69-72 style
There are two posts that come through holes in the cap. It's like they are melted or glued into place. I have had them fall out. I think I would grind/sand the back until it comes free. I would media blast the horn cap, prep with bond enhancer, prime, and paint with custom mixed vinyl dye from a paint supplier. You could repaint the bowtie/GMC or use a repro, they're cheap.

Thanks Tim. I have a spare one here with a broken tab so I'll try the grinding method on that one.

On the bowties I drill a very small hole in the back of the horn button, insert a pick and they pop right out.
