Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

Hello everyone,

I found a great donor truck.I previously asked about swapping my tranny from an auto to a manual. So now i found this great donor truck for a good price. It has a SM465 in it, but runs on a 350, and my truck runs on a 454 with a 700R4 tranny. The question is, if i was to buy this donor truck and swap the tranny, would everything bolt on or are there differences since the motors are different. I imagine the bell-housing wouldn't bolt on. If that is correct, can one of the bell-housings be modified or do i have to buy a whole bellhousing? If so can i please when from where can i find this bell-housing?

Thanks in advance

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

I have always been under the assumption that that trans will bolt right up to your big block I think they all share the same bell housing

The bell housings and trans will work. You will probably have to find a flywheel for the 454 I believe they are balanced different than the 350.

The bellhousing will fit just fine and the SM465 is a very heavy duty unit.

Get a 454 flywheel and sell the 350 flywheel. I'm not sure that 350 flywheel will even bolt up to the 454... Don't do it even if it does...

The pressure plate and clutch disc are good cores.

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

You could use just a balance plate with the stock 350 flywheel too! Saves some money.

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

THe casting number behind the drivers side head will help. Also the numbers off the pad in front of the passenger side head will be needed to tell what you have.
And check the same numbers on the donor truck.
Then look here to decipher it.

just to put this out there different patter on the flywheel between small and big block. find out what year you engine is and order on for that year. the bbc flywheel from 66 up all use the same patter but different balance I had a heck of a time finding one for my vortec bbc that was the correct balance. if York just using this as a he platform you can get a stock replacement flywheel at any parts store about 80 for a new one

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

454 is an external balance engine. I don't think just throwing a flywheel in ther is going to work out.

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

Why wouldn't it work out. A dedicated 454 flywheel will be balanced for it. Or a balancer plate with a 350 flywheel that's nuetral balanced.
Easy peasey!!

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

all you need to change is the flywheel, from what i understand is, the 350 dont count for diddly squat, he wants t put the stick behind the big block, as far as useing the 350 flywheel, no it wont work, it doesnt matter what year the 350 is

Bellhousings are the same. I have a 1 pc rear main engine from an '86 in my '78. Flywheels are definitely different though.

when are you looking to do this swap? i have the 350 flywheel you need, as my old burban had a 350 with the same trans. what condition is that 700 you have? 2 wd or 4wd?

i ask because id like a 2wd 700 for my truck...

maybe we can parts swap and make up the difference with some cash?

To be honest, i'm not quite sure what i want to do this the donor truck yet, it too nice of a truck to throw away for part out, so i thought of using the 700r4 in it for another project, i'll let you know how it goes for sure

About the flywheel, its the 350 flywheel that you have? because from my understanding on the forum members, the 454 flywheel varies from the 350's.

Thanks for the help and i'll get to you as soon as possible about the 700

btw, it a 2wd

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

Here is what you need to know....

-Bellhousings are the same. Small block, big block, even six cylinders. The SM465 bellhousing will absolutely bolt directly to your engine.

-454s use a different balance flywheel than small blocks and even other big blocks. You need a standard transmission flywheel for your 454. Bolt it on and go. Folks are muddying the water about the balance issue. Whether you get a used 454 flywheel or a new one, line it up and bolt it on and move on the the next thing. It's that simple.

I say this as the guy who has built two prior big block trucks and now own a current 454 truck with an SM465 in it. It's sitting in my driveway right now. These are things I've learned first hand and done personally.

Re: Transmission question, PLEASE HELP

I took a 350 flywheel to a machine shop and had it balanced for a 454, never had a problem with it. That was a lot of years ago though, might not be cost efficient anymore.
