OEM Cam VS Old Blazer Crane Cam
Folks,
I've been searching around with no prevail. I would like to change out my OEM crap cam with a new one; I have a Blazer Crane Cam on my shelf from an old engine(never installed) Lifts are 465i 488e. Would this cam even work on stock heads with stock springs? Thanks Everyone. |

Re: OEM Cam VS Old Blazer Crane Cam
Short answer, yes. The long answer is well it would be best if you had matching valve springs to go with that cam to make sure that the engine will stay out of coil bind or equally bad valve float. I have along with hundreds of thousnads of my fellow hotrodders have used a similar cam in the smallblock for years and don't change out the spring or anything else for that matter. I would assume[we all know what happens there] that the duration at 50 on that cam should be somewhere around 260-268. If so I am very familar with that cam but more so made by Comp Cams under the High Energy label 268H. One of my all time favorite street regular cams. I am hoping that you have a little better than stock 4 barrell intake and an ignition upgrade and maybe even some exhaust upgrades as well to help it breathe better. Jim

Re: OEM Cam VS Old Blazer Crane Cam
Thanks Hugger,
I do plan on getting new heads, but as you know funds are tight right now. However I do already have a Edelbrock Performer Intake and a 1986 Chevy HEI Dizzy upgrade. I plan on more but not this second. Oh and FYI, the total specs are: Lift .465i .488e. Duration .050 .224i .234e Duration 112 (if memory serves me correct) Crane Blazer Cam P/N4002 Grind #284-2H Last edited by Zable49; 12-31-2012 at 09:49 PM. |

Re: OEM Cam VS Old Blazer Crane Cam
My own experience with a cam that size in a truck is it is too big for stock converter and most rear gears. I ran a Crane 284/284 advertised and 228/228 @ .050 with .480/.480 lift in my Jimmy for awhile (motor came from my Camaro and when OEM Jimmy motor expired, Camaro motor made it in.)
That was replaced with a Crane 266/266 advertised 210/210 @ .050 and .440/.440 lift cam which is great for a truck. If you have a C20 with 4.57 go for it. Otherwise I would look for a much smaller cam.

Re: OEM Cam VS Old Blazer Crane Cam
Yeah, that cam is a pretty big one that is why I was asking about duration @ 50 being between 260 and 268 anything over that and your converter is not gonna be happy with you and you will have real drivability problems. I like the other poster would suggest a cam in the 20 to 268 range with that intake you have while it is a good one for the street the cam you already have does not match up very well with that inkae. Wow , I did not remember Crane having that big of duration with realitivly low lift levels like that. Lile I said comparble cam companies would have a duration of 260ish range for that amount of lift. so that is why my position from my earlier post has changedand I just dont think you would be happy with that one
