72 longhorn BB with A/C
I can get my hands on a 72 GMC Sierra Grande 3500 longhorn. The truck has the original Bigblock 402, 4 spd, A/C, very little rust and I'm just wondering if this truck is kinda rare or not?
The price is good regardless, but I would still like to know if the BB and A/C make it worth a good penny. Thanks

It is pretty rare, but numbers don't affect value on trucks as much as cars. Condition is everything. The manual trans behind the bigblock is even more rare than big block AC. Whatever, sounds like a sweet truck!

Like Mike C said, being a 4 speed BB is unique. All BB were automatics except in 1 tons, where you could order the 4 speed.
We purchased similar vehicle (72 Chevy c/30 Cheyenne) and transplanted drive train into a c10. It's now a ultra-rare C/10 with factory BB and 4 speed granny low - one of a kind If you change it over to auto, save all the clutch pieces and the bell housing x-member as they are unique and different than the small block pieces.

I have a friend that has a 100% original 72 Cheyenne super 3/4ton with a factory 402/3speed on the column. Has the glove box sticker and it dosent list any tranny option (wich would mean it has the standard 3 speed). Looked at a 402/4speed GMC Serria Grande last week and it listed the 402/4speed on the glove box sticker also. I have heard of 1/2t 402 stick trucks also??

Joe, I'm quoting from the 71 resto pack I got from GM. It lists only auto trannys available in c/10 or c/20 series trucks as drivetrain options with BB. So unless a change was made in 72, I'm spreading misinformation direct from GM. Anyway, sounds like you could get a 4 speed, but again, not a popular choice behind a BB and the clutch pieces are unique and extremely hard to locate.

Jeff, I will have agree on the 4speed no being a very common tranny with the 402. Both of these trucks were72's?? You never know with GM..LOL...I can buy the 72 GMC 402/4speed for pretty cheap if anyone needs one.

I bought a BB manual trans clutch linkage crossmember setup from Wes that came from a Suburban. I know you could get the manual trans behind the BB in trucks other than the one ton, they just are VERY uncommon. I'm still on the fence about swapping my TH400 for the SM465 in my SB Longhorn parts truck, but I've got the stuff which is 9/10 of the battle!

On the Chevy side of the house, there were only 2450 one ton Longhorns made in 72...I think the accepted numbers for GMC is 1/3 of chevy, so we are looking at only about 816 (if you ignore the .6 ...I doubt they made 816.6 trucks )in '72.
The fact that is is a Sierra Grande makes it a sweet truck. Unlike the 1/2 ton trucks, the 396 and then 402 engines are pretty common in the Longhorn/Custom Camper trucks. This sounds like a pretty sweet find, and as far as limited production numbers, i would say yeah. I wish I could get you actual numbers, but I would say it is both rare, and very desirable. Whats the condition of it? |

well thanks again everyone for your help. As for the shape; it's pretty decent. It's from Vancouver Island and I'll be the fourth owner. There is no rust in the cab except for a small hole in the cab corners. The underside is great. The body panels are all straight, the paint has been kept original, mint gate and doors, new front fenders and inners from GM and the diff and motor has been completely rebuilt. The wood deck is dead. Drives real nice, no funny noises except the 2 1/2 inch dual bullet mufflers. Air works great.

I admit it, I was way wrong.
My 71 resto pack indicates: 1/2 ton BB could be had with automatic or 3 speed column HD manual. NO 4 SPEED floor shifters. 3/4 ton BB could be had with 3 speed manual, 4 speed manual or autos. 1 tons 4 speed or auto. Anyone have a 3 speed column shift manual BB?

I am pretty sure it has a low hump. I would need to look at it again. I don't see it very often.

I was in Alabama one time about two years ago and I came across an original 72 BB 402 3 spd on column 3/4 ton... only one I've seen also with that combo.
