replacing a 305 TBI with a 96-2000 Vortec 350

Ive searched a few 100 posts & dont have all the answers yet

I have a 1987 1/2 t, 4x4, 305/400 with TBI.

Im installing a 96-2000 Vortec 350 (create motor)

I will be installing the 305 TBI on the Vortec 350

Thus far i need to change the following from 1987 305 to 1987 350

* Injectors for a 350 TBI
* 350 specific knock sensor http://www.summitracing.com/parts/smp-ks7
* 350 ESC module (HEI module) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/acc
-35362/applications/make/chevrolet/year/1987/model/r10/engine-size/5-7l-
350
* 350 chip for my computer # 1227747

Ill also need to
* Change the 305 distributer gear to a melonized gear for the Vortec roller
cam
* I purchased the Power+Plus 4 bbl manifold
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pfs-52006/overview/ for a
96-2000 vortec 350
* I will purchase an adaptor to go from 4bbl to a center mount 3 bolt TBI carb
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-2211/overview/

Questions
* changing to full length headers where is the most efficient location to weld
the sensor bung at
* instead of a chip if i aquire a computer that was installed in a 350 TBI
same service # as mine # 1227747 but had a 700r4 would the
fact that its programed for a 700r4 make it run bad ...w/o actually having
that trans? So far i cant locate my computer with a 350/400th. u have
one?
* Im a little unsure about the stock 305 distributor workn even with the new
melonized gear & the ESC module changed just feel like im missing
something here.
* the smog components will be deleted any ill effects ?does anyone have a pic of all the components that need to be eliminated?

Change the gear on the distributor and it will work. Weld the o2 bung in the collectors

My only concern is that induction and timing an such were optimized for the vortec. Taking the vortec system and using tbi instead is like cutting the edges of a square peg to fit it in a round hole. Why not use the whole system? Tbi is nice but why keep a club instead of a bow and arrow kinda thing?

In general yes but TBI is limited at best. My personal opinion if you not getting 30MPGs don't worry jakevpower

Ok well a crate is a lil different than a vortec from a factory truck
Vortec is a very efficiant head already. A carb can be as efficiant as fuel injection but that's after much tuning which is out of most ppls skill. Even I am having a hard time getting there.

You can do the tbi with all your things but I would suggest getting a custom tune chip to make the most of it.
You can also do a TPI which is better and would create a good combo with the vortec heads. Only downfall is that you need an adapter harness an a vortec tpi base. Which add cost but make a very reliable turn key daily driver.

A carb will be efficiant in one way..cost and simplicity. A holle 650 is a good general carb and user freindly.

I encourage you to do some research and see which one you may prefer. Either way you can't go very wrong.
