205/AA adapter help.

Got the AA adapter yesterday to mate my 205 to the NV4500 and have a question.

1) Is there supposed to be a seal or seal housing that goes on the input shaft? Otherwise will the oil leak from the bearing and be contained inside the adapter?

The adapter is good quaility but the instructions dont say anything about it.

dirrty larry will chime in soon. On my 700r4 i missed the seal that went in the end of the coupler and it filled my tcase with atf. I bet there is supposed to be one there. Just call AA and ask them

Yes you are missing the seal housing. The seal housing retains the bearing in the case along with sealing the input shaft. You can see it in the pic I have of one of my t-cases, this a NP203 but it uses the same style seal housing.


You can also see it on this 205 inside the adapter.

I have a figure 8 205 and it didn't have anything (sealwise) on the input shaft other than the funky cast iron adapter/mount that went around it.

I have heard the term "sealed" and "unsealed". Maybe this is what it refers too? I assume that's why the unsealed had issues with trans fluid ending up in the t-case?

The transfer case you have pictured is not a figure 8 style transfer case. The transfer case you have pictured is the later style circle pattern used in the 80s. The circle pattern 205 uses a seal that is mounted on the transfer case in an aluminum seal housing. The figure 8 transfer case has it seals in the adapter between the transmission and the transfer case. The figure 8 transfer case uses a lip seal in the housing and a O-ring on the shaft of the transfer case itself. Most cases when the transfer case fills up with tranny fluid from the transmission it is the o-ring that dries out and cracks or gets hard that's what happened to my suburban.

I have both. What confused me is the old style I have doesn't have the adapter, I bought it that way, so there wasn't any "seal housing" to transfer over to the newer round case which didn't come with one either.

I would recommend calling AA to see what they recommend. When I did my NV4500/205 swap the kit included a sealed front bearing to install in the front of the 205 to prevent the tcase fluid and trans fluid from mixing.

You can kind of see the sealed bearing in this picture. Mine is a figure 8 tcase but I would imagine they have a sealed bearing for a round 205 as well.

As above you need the bearing retainer and seal. That's what holds the oil and bearing from walking around.

That is for the front output, I'm sure they could make one for the input though. They've made some custom stuff for me in the past

OR, you could go to the wrecking yard with a 1/4'' allen wrench and probably find multiple 203s and swipe one off of one of those.



Another thing, if you had swapped the input gear to a short input, you probably could have forgone the 'custom adapter'
