Re: transmission compatibility
What are you trying to accomplish? Add overdrive maybe?
Any transmission prior to the LS series of engines will fit. Even then, some of them will. |

Re: transmission compatibility
Don't think you want an overdrive with a 6 . Prob best to stick with what you got so you do not have to worry about driveshaft lengths or anything unless you are thinking a manual tranny. Like gramps says though, pretty much any tranny that was behind a chevy engine.

Re: transmission compatibility
I've been exploring this myself as my truck has a 250 I6 also. I don't know if anyone here has done the swap to a 700r4 with the I6. So far as this website says that the carburator linkage will not have to be modified with a stock carburator which is great news for the I6 since I don't suspect you have a holly carb. The cable comes in many lengths so that's easy. They sell kits for the TC lockup conversion to the truck. I parted an 84 out that had the 700r4 so I have the crossmember and linkage and driveshaft. I don't see any difference between my crossmember or linkage but I haven't tried to bolt it up yet. The big thing would be what gear ratio you have. If you have 3.08s I suspect that would be too high for the I6 and the OD transmission. I happen to have a 3.42 rear axle so I'm looking for another gear each time I get on the freeway. You can look at you build sheet in the glove box and find what gear ratio you have.
Good info on the swap here http://transmissioncenter.net/700R4_Swap_Info.htm Last edited by 1LowToy; 01-12-2013 at 12:19 PM. |

Re: transmission compatibility
You'll have to move your crossmember and possibly change the driveshaft, but it will bolt to the back of your engine just fine.

Re: transmission compatibility
Why not just have your trans rebuilt? Most places i know charge 300 to 500 if you drop the trans off.Its more money then a junkyard but you know it will fit perfect and be brand new.

Re: transmission compatibility
I have put a 700r4 behind a 250 in my 80 gmc 1/2 ton. The 700r4 is a not a good choice if you have 3.08's. I had to hold mine to the floor in overdrive to do 70mph. It worked great in drive and was nice to have the lower first gear and the lock up converter. I have also had a 3/4 ton that had a 4 speed and I swapped it for a th400 Not a good idea. The th400 robs a lot of power and a 250 doesn't have much to spare. The best option in my opinion is either a th350 lock up with 3.08's or s 700r4 with 3.73's.

Re: transmission compatibility
The gear ratio is different on the turbo 400 and like sierra says that will rob power from your 6...best bet is just a 350 like what's in there.
