How does the steering wheel horn button mount? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just replaced my steering wheel with a different stock one, and I can't figure out how to put the internal horn parts back together so the horn works? There's a backing plate with 3 holes and some slits, a cup shaped metal piece, a plastic disc and 3 screws. There's this spring mounted pin that pokes up through the steering wheel. I think this is for the horn. I just can't figure out exactly how to mount it up so the horn will honk? I know as I try to figure it out, the horn honks like crazy lol

Lol...sounds like me a couple months ago...I had to make my neighbors mad with all the honking, then I figured out if I disconnected the battery, it wouldn't honk so much haha

Ok I'm going to try and explain. The spring goes in the little hole to rest on the cam that has the copper ring around it. Then the metal spring plate that has the holes in it then the metal cup then the plastic with the screw holes to tighten it all down. That's from memory when I did mine a few weeks back.

Is this the parts you have?

That's helpful, but I've still got a couple questions. That dial with the 3 holes that goes in first has an additional small pinhole that I don't see on the pic. Which way does it go? Also, how far do the screws go in? All the way?

I don't know what you speak of, can you post a picture of it?
The first picture has the plastic ring with the three screw holders up side down and yes they go all the way in just hand tight not torqued down. Here is how it should go. Top is 1 middle 2 bottom last.

It doesn't matter where that small hole is located as long as you have the correct side of the disk up. Yes, screw the screws in all the way. There is a shoulder on them that bottoms out on the wheel. Just be gentle with them so you don't twist them off, they don't have to be very tight.

Hi Vince,

The only problem with that illustration is that the small parts shown in the big box are not in the correct order. LMC is aware of it but won't change it.

Is number 9 one of them? They show a small piece going over the spring mounted nipple they pokes through the steering wheel. I don't see that part on mine. I guess it could have flown off when I took it apart, but I'm not seeing it

I just added a corrected picture to my previous post.

#9 in the picture starting at the bottom of the box is a spring, aluminum pin and a plastic keeper that holds the spring and pin in the tower/nipple on the cancel cam/horn contact. It pushes in and turns to lock it in the tower/nipple.

Turns out, the extra hole is on the cup shaped piece, and as long as the tab is facing to the top, I should be fine

Gotcha. I went and looked at it again, and there is a red plastic hollowed out piece that surrounds the nipple, and is down inside the steering wheel base. I assume that's the piece I was afraid might have come off?

I used the orignal spring in mine and it's all one piece. It has the little metal cover made to it. It also will come out if you want it to. I had to stretch the spring on mine to make it work good.

Oh when working on the horn just unplug it from the horn in the front driverside fender. That way you can see it making contact as you work but no sound.

Ok guys, I still need some help. I installed the pieces, but I can't get it to honk the horn, unless metal touches the center bolt. If I put it all together as it appears to go, it doesn't honk the horn when I press the horn button. It's like the current is carried through the nipple and the center bolt. I don't get it.

Here's a pic before installing anything but the steering wheel and bolt

Here's a pic with just the disc. I noticed it appears to fit best when turned so the concave part faces up, so that it clicks when pressed. I assume that's right. I tried it the other way too, and it still didn't work, and didn't feel right

hey guys i know how everything goes and in which order its just that my 67 has a very loose horn. if i tightne the three screws then it get nice and tight but then the horn doesnt work... so if i loosen it it still doesnt really work. so i know for sure that the cup is correct and the little plate is correct to but the plastic ring might be wrong? it has very deep "sockets" and i noticed there is one style ring that doesnt have deep sockets which one do i use for a 67 68 sterring wheel?

Ok, now I'm wondering if the reason it isn't working, is that my truck is a '69, but I'm installing a 67/68 steering wheel? Are the horn contact parts different for 67/68 wheels?

It sucks not being able to hear! LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB! After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
