Deep rust pocket

So I have some spots - mostly where my rear fenders attached to the sides where I haven't rusted clean through. I've wire wheeled them out and sprayed some rust preventer (not sure what I think of that stuff) - and then hit it with some self etching primer. Now I'm wondering if I should have just pulled out my welder and attempted to fill some of the deeper ones in (realizing I'd probably blow straight through). Just worried about bondo-ing in some of these - am I just being @n@l?

Re: Deep rust pocket

I had the same problem with mine. I took the whole bed apart and sent it to the sand blaster. I cut out the bad and welded in new metal. For the rust pits I primed and filled them. The blasting removed all the rust and then used spot putty because the pits were not that bad I just had alot. This is when I brought it back from the blaster and welding in my new strips and filling the small rust pits. Now the bed is smooth and waiting for paint. i hope this will help!

Re: Deep rust pocket

Definitely a help - wanted to make sure I was on the right path and there weren't any more tricks out there. Thanks for letting me I'm headed in the right direction. Panel is looking good... looks like a lot of hours already into it.

Re: Deep rust pocket

Here is what my bed looked like to where it is now. As you can see I had a bunch of rust. I didn't think I would fix it all. But I think it came out good. Take your time and replace the metal that you need to and treat and fill the rest.
