1966 burban
Hello everyone im new at this site and I need help with my project. My suburban is all original 283 v8 and manual 3 speed.Im doing the disc brake conversion kit but im keeping it 6 six lug.The problem I have is I cant do more than 55 mph on the freeway i was thinking of changing gear ratio but the cost of doing that is over 600 dollars im on a budget,is there a cheaper way I was thinking of swapping out the rear end with something newer I would like to keep the 3 speed manual and keep low on rpms on the freeway thanks

Re: 1966 burban
The absolute cheapest and easiest way is to find a 71-72 chevy truck rear end with coil springs and the 3:08 ratio. Any other way you will pay for fabrication as any other rear will have leafs. This will convert you to 5 lug so I would save the money on 6lug disc front and buy a 5 lug version for 500.00 less. Better yet find a wrecked 72 C10 and take the front and rear suspension out of it.

Re: 1966 burban
Tall tires will help. A lot of our trucks have much smaller o.d. Tires than they did originally .this in effect lowers ratio.
There are some good sites that you can plug your gearing and tire size into and it will calculate you rom at a givin speed. you could also pick up a three speed with the overdrive on the back. I have seen two recently. complete for $150 at a swap meet. You can keep the 3 on the tree linkage that way. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1966 burban
Some earlier three speeds ( i think they came out in 57)had a overdrive built into the tailhousing. I have heard you can install the housing on a non of trans. But don't no for fact. They are engaged by solenoid and have some stigma attached to them, but I now people who run the to this day. I almost bought the last one I seem and regretted not doing it. It was nice and just pulled from a driving car.

Re: 1966 burban
My father inlaw has a 70 with a six lug 3:08. Don't know if it is factory but it is a little high for me. But he also runs tall tires.
