Where did my throttle response go?

A while back I posted and boasted about my Quadrajet to Edelbrock 1407 swap! I said I had much better throttle response and gas mileage, after bolting down the 1407 my fan belts would actually squeal when I hit the gas, never did that with the Quadrajet, no I didn't spill gas or oil on them so I guess the power steering pump or alternator would have to catch up with the crank when revved up! That was great but after a few weeks it gradually stopped being that responsive and kinda feels like the old Quadrajet again! Any ideas why?

Did you just bolt it on and go? Probably needs to be tuned.

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

Got it from a guy on Craigslist who said it had been sitting on a shelf for 4 years, I said what the heck and took a chance, bolted it on and it ran great! So this situation is kinda like when you meet a hot new girl then a few weeks later you see her without her makeup on, lol!

Maybe,

Couple things could have happened. Vacuum line could be loose or leaking, timing could have drifted out, eliminate the simple stuff first. After 4 yrs of sitting, crud in the carb may have broke loose and be clogging something.

After everything else, then seriously consider tuning.

These are just my opinions, I personally haven't used the Edelbrock carbs, though in the past Carter AFB and AVS did end up on my engines. (IMO, Carter is Edelbrock minus chrome and sticker)

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Agreed, 4 years it could require a little love. I have ran that carb with zero problems

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

x2 vote on crud inside. I got a "never ran" 1406 off Craigslist (good deal anyway) and I bolted it it, it lead extremely bad, in fact people advised me to throw it away cause it was a "firebomb" lol. (this was the internal leaking after killing the engine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tbfjPNZLAw) It leaked a lot outside too.

All of this was because of dirt that had been able to fall inside of everything. I just took it apart and blew out all of the lines and re-adjusted the floats. Ran like a champ afterwords until the engine took a dump.

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

Carbs don't sit well. I've heard edelbrock is bad about accelerator pump issues. Clean it, tune and go from there

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

I'll second cleaning it out. I have quite a bit of Edelbrock experience and have encountered the same thing a couple of times. Tear it down (easy) and give it a bath in a solvent tank, then use compressed air to blow out all the passages.

in my defence I was drunk for 2 weeks lol.

its possible you just need to rebuild it gaskets could have rotted or the accelerator pump. did you add an in line filter when you shaped over carbs? could have some junk from the tank now sitting at the bottom of the bowl if you dident

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

Well if the accel pump sits and does go bad they have a habit of leaking out the top

Also the crud can be valid but idk about a carb raining dust inside lol

So maybe it's the same and your belts just don't squeal?
Or it had a small leak somewhere and it was lean and now that its sealed its rich.

I agree with cleaning it out. Didn't know it sat for so long. Just a Q but did you keep the q-jet?

Re: Where did my throttle response go?

Yes I still have the Q-jet. I've had good luck with Q-jets in the past, they've never given me major problems! I just have to get it through my thick head that my 454 is high mileage and I'm not going to get the performance results out of it that I expect so I'll clean out the Edelbrock and rebuild the Q-jet and hold a little performance comparison.
