61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

Following a recent post on how to restore a dash. (64-66) I decided to dig thru a box in the garage and re-built (freshen up) up an extra 61 dash for my wifes truck.
I documented photos of the process, and cleaned, painted the old parts. The gauge face plated looked good. I re-painted the needles, and tested the fuel gauge and lights. I tested the light with a 12 volt ryobi battery and some jumpers. All of the ligthts worked great. Found out the high beam indicator is the shape of a bowtie. I thought that was cool. My 64 just has a rectangular box.
Anyway, I noticed, I have two red lights, one for the oil pressure, one for the generator. I have two lights on the temp section, a red one for high temp, and a green one on the "C" side ??? strange.
Also I didnt notice turn signal indicaotr lights. There is a single green light on the lower left side of the dash, could this be a combined indicator to let you know if either the left or right signal is on.
I have yet to swap out the unit with the original in her truck. Since her truck is in the rebuilding stage, I didnt notice if they have seperate arrows for turn signals.
Any thoughts, photos, insight is apreciated.

Thanks,
Glenn

You will have a green turn signal on both sides of the dash.

Yes, the red bowtie highbeam indicator is cool, it should have been blue!!

On the 60-63, there is only one turn signal light. Interestingly though, if you pull the back off of the cluster, you will see there is a cutout for a turn signal on the opposite side under the backing plate. If you can get another cardboard tube and green lens from another instrument cluster, you can cut that hole out through the backing plate and put another light in there. You will want to get some bulb sockets to separate them too.

Re: 61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

Thanks PoDuck,

I have another cluster with a temp gauge. The one has high temp
Lights only. I'll leave the signal turn signal as it is.
Thanks for the info.

Interesing.. I have a 61 and have a turn signal indicator on both sides. Does that mean I dont have the correct cluster?

Here is a pic of mine.. You can see on the left side the turn signal indicator below and between the two smaller guages. I have the same on the right side.

61_FL_Apache

After reading the responses, I removed the dash from her truck and it has both indicators for turn signals kust like yours. This one had a temp gauge. The extra one in the garage, I picked up as a freebee has only one indicator and and no temp gauge (just and idiot light, both red and green.) Looks like I rebuilt the wrong one. Oh well, my luck. The one I restored is in much better shape then the one I just pulled from her dash.
ON a side note. There are a total of 6 knobs under the dash. Can you tell me what each does, from left to right.

Wierd things with these truck
We also have a 60 Corvair, again just a little different from the the 61 and up vairs.

Glenn.

PS Love the chrome grille. Cant afford to Chrome hers, were gonna shoot it silver for now.

Re: 61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

I'm not sure what makes the difference between dashes that have two signals and one. I've seen three of these clusters and all three had only one light for turn signals. I guess I just assumed they were all that way.

As for the knobs, left to right (going from a '62), headlights, windshield wipers, choke, blank, ignition switch, cigarette lighter.

I'm not sure what was meant to into the blank spot, but on my truck there is a round indentation, but no hole for the one you are probably calling a hole closest to the steering column.

Re: 61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

Now that I see 61_fl_apache's dash, it appears that there is a throttle cable in that hole on his. That's likely what it's for.

Re: 61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

Is it just the Apache that has the different instrument gauges circled in chrome? I don't notice it on other regular instrument clusters.
Thanks,
AJ

Re: 61 apache dash lights/wiring questions

Anyone? I am looking to replace my cluster and I found a nice Apache one but the gauges are circled in chrome. I want to restore as correctly as possible and was wondering if it was only an Apache thing because my Suburban is not an Apache.
Thanks
