Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

Total newb to C10s. I've built S10s and my personal favorite air cooled volkswagens. I found this C10 and got it for a steal. I have many many questions I hope you all can help. My motto is "you'll never learn if ya don't try". So I'm gonna try to give this truck another chance at life.

I can weld and I think I'm pretty good at fabricating. Not scared to try nothing new with metal. I just like to study and know my task before attempt it.

Chopped and channeled. Had bags at one point front only is what I was told. I dig it. I feel it needs another chance.

I posted a small bit in suspension section as well

Few questions.

Can anyone help me be 100% sure the year. I did my own research. I found it to be a 71'. I just wanna be sure before I start the title process.

I wanna build this truck to a daily driver status. Static drop, maybe bags. We'll see. I'm lookin for straight 6 with the classic 3spd. I know I know I'll prolly catch some slack. But oh well. I wanna keep rear coil over as well.

So all this said people please give me some guidance.

Thanks
Brandon

I need all front suspension. I mean all. What years will fit, so I know when I go pilfering through local junk yards.

Thanks

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

IMO You got one hell of a find right there! A chopped top is the "Holy Grail" of customizing options for these trucks! That things already been shaved too! Kudos to you my friend! You have my dream project! Find a junk 72 with power brakes and if it still has the 12 bolt snag it too! If I may be so bold, what did you give for it? Go ahead, run the blade right through my heart! Somebody will chime in with facts...I'd only be guessing on what bolts on and what doesn't...I rebuilt my 72 for tried and proven speed and handling...I installed 2-1/2" drop spindles with 2" drop springs up front and added an inverted mounted 1-1/4" Sway Bar. 4" drop springs out back with a 12 bolt 3:08 Posi and it drives like a Camaro! Welcome to the forum Brandon!

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

I will be straight with ya! I traded a .22 rifle for it. I had $75 in rifle and spent $75 in gas. So right now I'm at $150 and it's settin at my house.

Is a chop complicated on these? I done one on a 66' beetle, they say there the hardest to chop.

Anyhow it's pretty cool. Like I said chopped and channeled. Guy said it was channeled 2" I don't know how much on chop.

Here is a pic of the 66' beetle I chopped and made a volksrod truck out of.

Any body confirm year of my new C10?

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

Your KILLIN ME! With a .22 rifle! For me, laying out, cutting and welding would be the easy non-expensive part of "chopping"...Getting the glass to fit would be the nightmare, "for me"...Ive been a union Ironworker/welder for 35 years...I replaced both rocker panels, cab corners, both floor pans, two inner fenders and the right fender...Oh, I rebuilt the radiator core support and battery tray as well. My motto is "no bondo"...Dont you even dream of selling that truck unless you contact me first! Please! That VW looks damn good! Loose the hood and some sheet metal up front, replace it with a little small block. Throw a short axled S-10 rear end under it and "BOOM!" You got rippin little rat rod that looks like a Chopped 52 Chevy pick-up!

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

If it was a Chevy the vin would start with CC, since yours has one C it is a GMC.

Sweet deal, I'd find another cab if it was mine, but I think they ruin these trucks when they chop them. It's yours though and it's an awesome start for what you have in it.

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

I'm lookin at a complete running, daily driven 67' Lwb.

Drive it home $800

All sheet metal will be safe. I'm gonna use hood and grill on mine. Possibly swap out radiator support. Mine has been channeled. I could swap it at just drop frame horns.

Keep you alls eyes open. If deal goes through I'll have a 67' to part out in here.

I'd have to swap out all metal. They cut from headlight to taillight and remove 2" from body line.

Chop looks great but needs a new roof skin. Whoever did the chop pour the heat when they welded it back up. A good amount of warpage on roof.

Nice find you found. It already laying frame to! I would start by getting that frame off the ground though!

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

wow! that looks like a project cudo's too you for takeing it on.
I was looking at the inner door, tailgate, firewall and lower tail lite hole thinking wtf??? somethings off there. 2" out of the whole body HUH' that certainly will be differnt.
I gotta ask is it not sitting on the frame correctly? it looks to be sticking too far out the front and the rear arches dont line up with the wheel wells?

Oh and welcome aboard I'm anticipateing what you do with this truck by the looks of the bug the truck will be a wild lookin build.
lookin forward to more of it.

That is called "sectioning" and it is not necessarily a bad thing. As long as it is chopped anyway I would just go with it. It makes them look really low with a static drop. It looks like they did a nice job on the sectioning and chop. Just build it the way it is...

I agree, I would just try to start assembling as is. It will probably a major pain, but the finished product will be worth it!

Re: Total newb, found a chopped and channel forgotten project.

It's gonna be a long slow build. I gotta find a lot if parts. It's gonna be fun. I plan on posting and keep it current as I can.

Yes I found it on CL. Dude that had it was really cool. I'm happy with it. I wanna a slammed C10 but I couldn't do it to one in good shape. Someone else molested this so in dont feel bad about adding my own touches to it.

What's the difference between channeling and sectioning? Just curious

Thanks

Channeling is dropping the body down over the frame and sectioning is what you have with the 2" removed the length of the body. If it was channeled there would be a step in the floorboard the depth of what ever the channel drop was.
