Best budget headers
What can I find a decent pair of headers for an 84 305 dual exhaust? Not looking to spend over $250...thanks in advance.

Re: Best budget headers
Chevelle headers work great!! I have a set of 3/4 length on my ZZ4. Car headers cost less than trucks. They are tucked up better into the frame. However, you'll practically have to redo the entire front pipe to make them fit.

Re: Best budget headers
I believe the Summit headers are under $150. You get what you pay for, but I'm running some 15 year old $89 Black Jack's that are essentially the same as the Summits. The flanges are thin, as are the pipes, but they are headers. The best kept secret for cheap headers with flimsy flanges is to coat the gaskets with Ultra Copper RTV. Mine haven't leaked in 5 years.

Re: Best budget headers
i have run summit brand on a few vehicles like said you get what you pay for. for the most part i never could complain but i did have to double up on gaskets to prevent them from leaking.

Jegs for me--no issues at all with them and have been on for over a year now and still don't leak.

Re: Best budget headers
Question on the A body headers... I hear they do not hang as low and offer more ground clearance. How is clearance around the transmission cross member? Truck headers usually drop the right side low enough that the pipe goes under the cross member, are the A body headers the same or would the pipe go over the top instead?

Re: Best budget headers
I've got the hedman 69090's on mine. They are cheap, well built, and will work with angle plug heads should you ever go that route. The ball and socket collector is as slick as whale poop, and does not leak.
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/hed-69090 I have ran the Jegs headers on a car before and they are decent for the money and fit well. The primary's are a little smaller than the hedmans, but on a 305 that won't really matter. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Best budget headers
im a fan of the ball and socket. gives plenty of wiggle room and i have never had a leak problem even without any extra sealer

Re: Best budget headers
I have a saying cheap things aren't good and good things aren't cheap.
Some REMFLEX gaskets makes any cheap header workable though. I've been hearing a lot about chevelle headers but seen no physical evidence Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Best budget headers
I picked up a set at swap meet $25. Had them blasted $40. Used KBS high temp exhaust manifold coating $20. Watching the wife tying to paint them- priceless
I use to use Ears performance header gaskets, but it looks like that remflex stuff is about the same. |

Re: Best budget headers
^Funny!
Will the Summit budget headers be a direct bolt up to the straight pipes?

Re: Best budget headers
These shorty's are best bang for your buck:
You'll need to put a small clearance notch where the O2 bung is on the the top frame rail otherwise they fit mint. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sport-Manifo...ce84b4&vxp=mtr |

Plan on having to make it fit, how much, dunno. My '86, the mods to go to the factory duals were minimal. Couple adapters and some clamps...

Re: Best budget headers
You can get a brand new set of Hooker Competition Headers from Advance Auto Parts that will bolt right up. Price is $219, but if you order online and use the promo code HUGE50, they will knock $50 off the price and shipping is free.

Re: Best budget headers
i used a set of flowtech headers. 175 shipped i believe. if you have a 4x4 you have to modify the center bumpstop for it to fit.

Re: Best budget headers
Can someone take a look at these pics and give some opinions or product advice on what headers would be a direct bolt on to my exhaust pipes. (without moding my exhaust pipes) many thanks!

Re: Best budget headers
IMO, direct bolt on on, with NO mods, pull the manifold and put it back on. Some modification will have to be done, at least cutting the pipe to length.
Kinda like buying a new carb and not having to adjust it....
