Angry breaking oil pan bolts!!!!

I am torqueing down my oil pan bolts to the recomended 80 Inch lbs and I have snapped 3 of them so far. Anyone else have this happen?

Not to insult anybody but is your torque wrench set to inch pounds or foot pounds? 80 inch pounds is approx 7 foot pounds (12 x 7 = 84)

if i was you i'd get some new ss bolts and recheck you're torque wench settings because they're barley beyond finger tight at 80inch'pounds, at that setting you shouldn't snap even plastic bolts

even if they bottom out you will still reach torque you just wont have any clamp load. and I agree 80 inch pounds is not enough to break anything...

I figured it out!! operator error. I was using a buddys torque wrench that doesn't CLICK when it get to torque spec, this one just gives a bit. So I was tightening the sh@t out of them. What a dumbass!!!!

I had to heli coil one of them, the others came out fine. But i went back to check my timing chain cover because it was the same torque spec and 5 of them snapped off So I think that calls for a little cursing @%&^$&^ &^%$)#$@@. There, I feel better ah well live and learn

OUCH! Sorry to hear about that Dubie...
A buddy of mine rebuilt an engine and used a cheap-@ss tiawanese torque wrench to torque the bearing caps. Galled several rod and main bearings because they were overtightened. That was an expensive lesson for him to learn.

I LIKE TO USE 1" LONG 1/4" SET SCREWS AS STUDS FOR SMALL BLOCK OIL PANS & VALVE COVERS. THEY ARE EXTREEMLY HARD, CHEAP (AROUND 22 CENTS EACH), & MAKE INSTALLING THE GASKETS MUCH MUCH EASIER. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG -- TORQE WRENCHES ARE A REAL MUST SOME THINGS, BUT I FIND THAT I DON'T REALLY NEED THEM FOR OIL PANS, TIMING COVERS, & VALVE COVERS, & I HAVE A SMALL FORTUNE TIED UP IN A COUPLE OF SNAP-ON TORQUE WRENCHES, THAT I LOVE TO FIND EXCUSES TO USE.
